The Zoo at the Edge of the World
The Zoo at the Edge of the World | Eric Kahn Gale
7 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
From the author of The Bully Book comes a timeless story about a young boy, his father, and the world that comes between them, which New York Timesbestselling author Peter Lerangis called "magical, mysterious, fresh, original, and full of heart." Marlin is not slow, or mute; what he is is a stutterer, and that makes it impossible for him to convince people otherwise. What he is also is a Rackham: the younger son of the world-famous explorer Ronan Rackham, the owner and proprietor of the Zoo at the Edge of the World, a resort where the well-to-do from all over the globe can come to experience the last bit of the wild left at the end of the nineteenth century. In order to impress a powerful duke who comes to visit the zoo, Marlin's father ventures into the jungle and brings back a mysterious black jaguar, the only one in captivity. Everyone is terrified of it, including Marlinuntil one night, when the jaguar confers upon him a powerful gift. Soon, Marlin finds himself with a difficult choice to make and, finally, something to say. If only he can figure out how to say it.

Wow, what a book! I expected it to be a typical children's book and therefore was surprised to find a lot more depth, ethical questions and philosophical thought in it. And, if I'm allowed to compare, a lot better than “The One and Only Ivan“ 🙈

LiljaPleasant Sounds quite interesting 😊 5y

I love that summer means I have more time to go on these little adventures with my daughter.

I love that my daughter is now old enough to read books I'm also interested in reading. Gonna take advantage of her school library loan! 😁

I read this aloud to my 6 & 8 yr old daughters. A boy has grown up in an exotic zoo in the middle of the jungle in South America. Something strange happens and as a result, he forges a new connection with the animals. But is this a good thing? This was a little darker than my kids are used to: violence and references to murder. There was also some young romance. I prob would have skipped it had I known, but both my girls loved it anyway. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

#octphotochallenge Today was unexpectedly easy; the book I'm reading my kids at bedtime takes place at an exotic zoo in South America. Love the setting. #setinsamerica @RealLifeReading
