Fun, quick read about Aubrey, a young wizard thirsty for knowledge, who goes to study with a powerful shape-changer. He arrives to discover the shape-changer is married, the servants are odd, & the villagers hate everyone in the household. Nothing is as he expected or, Aubrey finds, as it seems. The truth is elusive but when Aubrey figures everything out, nothing is the same. First published in 1995, this one holds up & I‘ll read more by Shinn.

Beautifully written just not my favorite story.

Lunch with a book at the local cafe that is only accessible by bike or on foot. This was the first book I found that I could fit in the pocket of my biking jersey.
