The Sick Bag Song
The Sick Bag Song | Nick Cave
7 posts | 9 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
The Sick Bag Song chronicles Cave's journey with his band the Bad Seeds on a twenty-two-day, North American tour. It is a highly personal account that blends memories, musings, poetry, lyrics, flights of fancy and road journal. Drawing inspiration from Leonard Cohen, John Berryman, Patti Smith, Sharon Olds, folk ballads and ancient texts, THE SICK BAG SONG takes the form of an epic quest, turning over questions of inspiration, creativity, loss, death and romantic love. It is also a companion piece to his feature documentary 20,000 Days on Earth. The Sick Bag Song explores and develops the mystique of Nick Cave.

If you‘re a Nick Cave fan, you‘ll probably love this. It was very much like reading one of his songs and gave me a perfect Sunday morning.

Pickpick

Let me preface this review with the fact that I love Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. What else is there to say? It‘s Nick Cave at his best. If I were still in school half the book would have been lovingly quoted on my notebooks and paper textbook covers.

Just watched Nick Cave's One More Time with Feeling- while it's a couple years old, my heart goes out to him, his wife, & son in the grieving of the death of their son. One thing that struck me: he compared this tragic death&event in their lives to that of a rubber band- no matter how you live your life and the stages of grief and healing you go through, you will always come back to that one event that changed your life forever.

Emily92Bibliophile 7 years it's been since my Dad's death, and even in my current stage of healing, everything goes back to that point in time now, just like a rubber band. While I have Faith in the Eternal Father, the Caves do not, and it breaks my heart for how this death has changed their lives. 8y
kspenmoll Thank you for this. A close friend and colleague lost her daughter in a similar tragic accident last month. She is seeking stories and words to help her survive. Her daughter was ( among other things) involved in music & theatre & had a stunning voice. Will listen as this artist is new to me & may share with her. (edited) 8y
Emily92Bibliophile @kspenmoll I do warn you his songs are very dark and rough; I can only listen to him every now and then-however there are some songs that he is seeking hope. This documentary is very raw and real in the dealings with grief, but I personally think there is a hopeful undertone in it. I'm not sure how someone who has had a tragic event happen so fresh to them will take it- I have been able to listen to him and watch from 7 years of grief/healing. 8y

Emily92Bibliophile But if you think the documentary is one to share to her than go for it! The book is more giving me insight to Nick Cave, bc he wrote it about 10 years before the accident- for me to understand his thought process in life and music. C.S Lewis is also a really good author to look to- his writing helped me heal 8y
kspenmoll Thanks! That is why I thought to listen etc first. Will definitely look at CS Lewis as she feels her daughter strongly & knows her to be in a higher place helping her. It's a journey for me as well trying the best I can to be there. Appreciate your thoughts. 8y
Emily92Bibliophile Your welcome ! I hope this helps you and your friend in any way! My prayers are with both of you😊 8y
