"Ivan" is the name for the average rank and file Soviet soldier, much like the American "GI Joe." Merridale successfully attempts to capture the experience of the underfed, poorly prepared, and long suffering Russian soldier during WWII. Particularly harrowing was their difficulty during the 18mo long Battle of Stalingrad where the life expectancy of a soldier was sometimes a mere 24 hours.
