The Watchers: a chilling tale based on true events | Neil Spring
8 posts | 7 read | 3 to read
A chilling tale based on true events from the bestselling author of The Ghost Hunters, now a major ITV drama starring Rafe SpallAt the height of the Cold War, officials at the Ministry of Defence conducted a highly secret investigation into unusual events that occurred along a strip of rugged coastline within the Pembrokeshire National Park nicknamed 'The Broad Haven Triangle'. The events made national headlines: lights and objects hovering in the sky, ghostly figures peering into farmhouse windows, cowering animals, and poltergeists plaguing a terrified family of witnesses. Thirty years later, official files pertaining to these occurrences were finally released for public scrutiny at the National Archives. The disclosure prompted a new witness to come forward to speak of what he knew. His testimony rocked the very foundations of the British Government. This is his story.

Mehso-so

This novel was inspired by the wave of UFO sightings in Wales, UK in 1977. I hadn't heard of these sightings so this lead to an interesting Google search. This book however is a work of fiction and is very loosely based on those true events.

Im left feeling a bit meh over this book. I think the premise is a great idea however it wasn't atmospheric enough to give me any spooky / paranormal vibes. Well written but missed the feels.

Pickpick

What I call a good bad book. It's like an episode of the X-Files set in late '70s West Wales.
At its best: the relationship arc between the narrator and his grandfather; a credible portrayal of OCD/anxiety.
At its worst: the portrayal of women as alluringly damp-thighed from the shower or puffy-faced with lips like blue slugs.
Personal note: I know and love St. Bride's Bay and Broad Haven!
Trigger warnings: a satanic cult; Margaret Thatcher

rockpools 😂😂. Bother. Seem to have stacked it! 7y
quietlycuriouskate Perhaps I should clarify: Mrs Thatcher is neither damp-thighed nor slug-lipped... whatever else one might say about her. (I have a dangerous mind! #sorrynotsorry ) 7y
Balibee146 Lol I love the way you correlate the evil of The Milk Snatcher with a Satanic Cult 👍👍👏👏👏👏 Intriguing review 6y
