Black Butler, Volume 3
Black Butler, Volume 3 | Yana Toboso
6 posts | 16 read | 2 to read
Terrorizing its populace, Jack the Ripper has shaken London to its very core. But when Sebastian Michaelis, singular butler of the Phantomhive house, lays bare the madman's true identity, all that is left for him to do is eliminate the perpetrator in the name of the Queen and Phantomhive. But inhumanly efficient skills don't guarantee victory when the opponent is just as supernaturally gifted! And though Sebastian may be able to save Ciel from physical harm in the battle that ensues, will the young earl ever recover from the emotional scars it will leave on his heart?

I'm totally sold on this series. Total Gothic and Victorian vibes along with amazing characters and quirky storyline. I'll definitely be keeping up with this series.

Third book resolves the Jack the Ripper case, where we also get introduced to a new character and learn a bit about Ciel's family. I'm a bit confused on the timeline though since the first death seemed to have occurred at least two years ago?? So it's just been an open case since then? Ends on a happy note since Christmas is around the corner!

I loved this!!! A great story. It has action, drama, humor, and plenty of blood. It's a well balanced story and probably my favorite manga read yet. Love Sebastian -- can I have one?

I had high hopes for this series, but I found vol 2 (not in the database) disjointed, I was alarmed at how Toboso sexualized the 12-year-old protagonist, and I had serious reservations about the villain. Unfortunately, she doubles down on the psychotic trans villain angle in this volume, and the rest of it just didn't float my boat.

Sigh. I wish I could click with a new-to-me manga series, but I keep on striking out.

moranadatter Which ones have you enjoyed? 7y
xicanti @moranadatter SKIP BEAT! and YOTSUBA&! are my absolute favourites. I also love A SILENT VOICE, EMMA, PRINCESS JELLYFISH, and CHOBITS. 7y
moranadatter @xicanti I haven't read Skip Beat. I'll have to check that out. Have you tried Stellvia? If you read a bunch of shoujo, Nozaki-kun is one of my favorites. 7y
xicanti @moranadatter my library doesn't have either of those. :( I'll check around for used copies. 7y

Oh Sebastian. He is one hell of a butler 😋
I just love the trouble he gets into trying to keep Ciel safe. And his interactions with Grelle never fail to make me laugh!
