Summer Half
Summer Half: A Virago Modern Classic | Angela Thirkell
4 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
To his parents' dismay, Colin Keith - out of the noble but misplaced sense of duty peculiar to high-minded young university graduates - chooses to quit his training for the Bar and take a teaching job at Southbridge School. Little does Colin imagine that he will count among his pupils the demon in human form known as Tony Morland; or that the master's ravishing, feather-brained daughter Rose will, with her flights of fancy and many admirers, spread chaos throughout school and village. Humorous, high-spirited and cleverly observed, Summer Half is a comic delight.

From one “summer title” to another (I loved the last one; The Growing Summer by Noel Streatfeild).

I have a bit of a backlog of Thirkell titles so I try to remember to read one or two a year. 😆

Cathythoughts Lovely pic. I like the golden coloured drink bringing out the book cover 👌🏻 (edited) 2y

Amiable That cover looks almost three-dimensional! It‘s mesmerizing. 2y

LeahBergen @Cathythoughts Thanks! And it‘s white wine. 😆 2y
LeahBergen @Amiable It‘s pretty cool, isn‘t it? 2y
CarolynM This was one of the first Thirkells I read, maybe even the very first. Enjoy! 2y
LeahBergen @CarolynM Thanks! It‘s starting out well with some very good Thirkell-ish humour. 👍 2y

I am very much feeling the Angela Thirkell right now. Close to finishing the current one, so downloaded the next few, er, or six, in the series.

rretzler 🤣So, I‘m not the only one! Plus having them on the Kindle means you don‘t have to find shelf space for them and you can‘t see them, so you can avoid the guilt! 5y
quietjenn @rretzler definitely not the only one! And the no shelf space is certainly an advantage! 5y
BookNAround I have all of her Barsetshire books. 😁. She‘s fabulous. 5y

Pickpick

Late to the party, but here's my #booktober day 14 - set in a school. Summer half has all that you want from a Thirkell, but with the other side of the boarding school stories you read as a kid. Just brilliant. #setinaschool

Verity Honourable mentions to Carry On 8y
Verity And the entire chalet school series - but I have so many of them and I've had a drink so photographing them is not practical! 8y
