Mules and Men
Mules and Men | Zora Neale Hurston
Mules and Men is a treasury of black America's folklore as collected by a famous storyteller and anthropologist who grew up hearing the songs and sermons, sayings and tall tales that have formed an oral history of the South since the time of slavery. Returning to her hometown of Eatonville, Florida, to gather material, Zora Neale Hurston recalls "a hilarious night with a pinch of everything social mixed with the storytelling." Set intimately within the social context of black life, the stories, "big old lies," songs, Vodou customs, and superstitions recorded in these pages capture the imagination and bring back to life the humor and wisdom that is the unique heritage of African Americans.

I wanted to like this book as it is an anthology of black folklore & hoodoo(voodoo) which sounded interesting.
Unfortunately the venacular that she used for the first two-thirds of the book made it really heavy going for me. In the end I managed to get the audiobook (unfortunately abridged). The last third was slightly easier reading.
With this book I have managed to get a #bookspinbingo for July. Woohoo!

Smarkies @TheAromaofBooks ya! I am impressed I got it! But to be fair I picked the line with my bookspin and the lowest page count. 😂😂 4y

Sad to say I really struggled with this. I haven't read Hurston since HS but I remember loving her. I was expecting this to be anthology style stories but instead Hurston writes about her travels and the folktales are generally very short with punchlines that sometimes went over my head. I also struggled with the dialect. I feel like I needed to know much more about this topic already to appreciate this. I did like the part about the toe party.

My goal is to finish Mules and Men this morning. I wasn't expecting this to be nonfiction when I started it, just a collection of stories, but Hurston wrote it as the story of her journey to collect the folklore and inserts her experiences with the tales she heard as conversations. I'm sure it is highly edited to create a narrative but I'm counting it as my "unexpected" NF. #nonfiction2019

A humorous collection of folk tales that remind me of the stories my great grandmother used to tell. Fun and educational read.

#MarchIntoReading Day 3 - Recent Non-Fiction Read

Zora had a great interest in African American storytelling & folklore traditions that were prominent in the American South. At a time when black lives weren't given much regard at all, she spent 1928-1932 visiting New Orleans and her hometown area in FL. She recorded the stories they told, and collected them into this book - 100 in total.

Gezemice Interesting! I loved reading about her in the past year. She had a view of African American writing so much more uplifting than her contemporaries - celebrating the culture, instead of writing about being downtrodden. I respect that. 7y

"The asphalt curved deeply and when it straightened out we saw a huge smoke-stack blowing smut against the sky."

Parts of this collection is told in vernacular and parts have such vivid imagery as above. It's making me want to reread Their Eyes Were Watching God again #wonderwomenwednesday #readwomen #WNDB

LitLogophile That's so funny -- I've never read this, but I grew up in this area, near Polk County 8y

Spurred into reading this by The Turner House by Angela Fluornoy. I like the descriptions of the South in the 30s as much as the folklore.

Started this little guy at 4:00 am this morning. I hate myself for waiting until the last minute to start reading through my research but I'm loving this book all the same!
