Crying in H Mart: A Memoir | Michelle Zauner
post image
Pickpick

This short memoir by Michelle Zauner hits just the right notes, or should I say—flavors. The parts of the book where Zauner describes cooking and eating Korean food are where this book shines brightest. It‘s easy to say that the other parts aren‘t as good, but then again, very good has a hard time measuring up to flawless. #memoir #nonfiction #foodwriting #bookofthemonth

My current read, Crying in H Mart. It isn‘t perfect, but the food descriptions are phenomenal. If you love food writing, those parts alone make this book worth the read.
Bonus content: My cat Josephine has claimed my balance board. Everything is a scratching post if you‘re creative 😼

Great Gatsby | F Scott Fitzgerald

My first post as a Book Riot contributor is up on their site: http://bookriot.com/2017/05/01/thank-english-teacher/ I'm incredibly excited about it. I talk about The Great Gatsby, being a smart ass, and teaching English. 😍 I'd love it if my lovely littens read it. Tell me what you think.

Bookish_Predator @BeckyRenner I've just read your post and loved it! I didn't go to school much so missed all the books for English classes so I know I've missed out on so many wonderful books and the discussions that go with them. Have always been a reader though and now may be the time to start some classics, thanks to you. 😊 7y
RebeccaRenner @Bookish_Predator it's never too late for books! 😊 7y
Bookish_Predator @BeckyRenner that is so very true! Where do you suggest I start? 😁 7y
See All 10 Comments
RebeccaRenner @Bookish_Predator it depends on what you like. I love Gatsby, but I'd also want to read more books/classics by women. I love flannery O'Connor, and To Kill a Mockingbird is a perennial favorite. 7y
Bookish_Predator @BeckyRenner I'm a big fan of horror, mysteries and thrillers, basically lots of deaths and whodunnit? So maybe I should start with classics that include that and work my way further when I've read some of those. 7y
RebeccaRenner @Bookish_Predator Read Frankenstein! 7y
Bookish_Predator @BeckyRenner I have that as a bind up with Dracula. Oohh, I'll be picking that up when I get home tomorrow then. ☺️ 7y

RebeccaRenner @Bakingbookworm Some of the promotional materials don't exactly match with the content, so be aware. It's definitely not a YA novel. And it has a few deliberately unlikable characters. Foxyfictionista Your annotations are amazing. I hope you write a book one day. 7y

Foxyfictionista @BeckyRenner Wonderful! Keep us posted! 7y
RebeccaRenner @shawnmooney Thanks! Lol finally got something out of that high school misery. My favorite is the "metaphor for the tediousness of this book" part. Lol #FutureEnglishTeacher 7y
Marchpane OMG this is hilarious ? especially "time of death" LOL. We were taught not to write in red because it would seem "angry" - completely appropriate in this case ? 7y
RebeccaRenner @Marchpane I usually don't write in red as a teacher, but I did this annotation when I was 16. It might have been just what I had on hand. Seems appropriate now though. Lol 7y

Still loving this book, littens. But I do have a question: does anyone know why all the chapter titles start with A's? #botm

8little_paws I do! I wrote the author an email and he wrote me back! Let me find it and copy and paste the answer. 7y
8little_paws Here you go:
Now, as to the A's in the chapter headings. Early in the drafting of the novel, I had the instinct that I should follow this rule, and I trusted my instinct. In retrospect, I think I wanted to signal to the readers that while AGIM takes place in a dark era for Russia, that the book has an element of play and a touch of magic about it.

7y
RebeccaRenner @8little_paws Thank you! That's so cool that he answered. ❤️ 7y

I made a goodreads list for my #LitsyAtoZ Challenge. Knowing me, I will read completely different books than I said I would. Also, I can't seem to choose between some of them, hence to two Ys. Any of you littens participating? What do your lists look like? The rest of mine is here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/7298629-rebecca-renner?shelf=litsyatoz-rea...

CocoReads I started a list on paper but then I abandoned it because I always wind up changing my mind. 7y
Theresa You're doing Infinite Jest?? I bow to you! 👏👏👏 I struggle with DFW. I bailed on one of his short story collections, but I'm reading this now & finding it strangely enjoyable. 7y

kim.guernsey I made a goodreads list too! 7y
Loreen I do this with all my challenges. It makes it easy to keep track of my plans. 7y
sprainedbrain 🙋🏻 I usually have a shelf for each of my challenges tbr, and then another shelf for the books I have read for that challenge. I move them as I finish them because I am a nerd. 🤓 7y
Daisey I usually make Goodreads shelves for my year long challenges, but only add books once reading or completed. I also have a private Goodreads group where I keep specific lists for each challenge with tasks, possible books, and completed books. Those lists of possible books are always changing! 7y
RebeccaRenner @CocoReads I end up changing my mind, too. But I think this will be more of a suggestion list. 7y
RebeccaRenner @Theresa Next year is going to be my year of long books. I want to read Don Quijote and Moby Dick, too. 7y
RebeccaRenner @Handmade_Redhead I tried to do that with the Book Riot Challenge. And here I am: it's December and I'm 5 books behind! 😬 7y
RebeccaRenner @angrylilasian Link me to your list! 7y
RebeccaRenner @BookishMarginalia It's been sitting on my shelf for a year. It's about time I give it a whirl. 7y
RebeccaRenner @AReaderWhoMoms Send me the link! I want to know what you're reading. 7y

I've been so busy with the school year starting. So I've been doing the audiobook thing. This is good book that describes an important civil rights case with clarity. The most profound thing to me though is that it's set where I live. I'm finding that it's easy to forget that injustice has happened (and in many places continues) in very familiar places.

brendanmleonard I need to read this - excited about the movie! 8y
akfreeborn I read this book a couple of years ago. I live in Florida and the history is so recent. I found the injustices alarming. I think of this book often especially when driving in and around Sumter, Lake and other inland counties. 8y
RebeccaRenner @akfreeborn One of the murders I just read about happened on a road I have driven all of my life. When I heard that part, I stopped what I was doing, and I was like, Wait. What? It's a good illustration of privilege, that I haven't had to think about these things before. 🙁 8y
See All 7 Comments
RebeccaRenner @brendanmleonard It's going to be a movie?! I didn't know! 8y
brendanmleonard @BeckyRenner I think it is! I may be getting it confused with other Thurgood Marshall projects. 8y
akfreeborn @BeckyRenner I can feel for you. This is not a part of history I learned much about in school and I'm sure you had no idea either even though it's where you live. My kids visit their dad in that area and I always think of the description of "the crime" and all the people that likely just went "missing" in that area. Gives me chills and I hope things are much different now. 8y
Jennifer3 I read this a couple years ago myself. Mr. Marshall and those trying to shed light on the injustices of their time sure had a lot of courage and tenacity. There were so many parts of that book that were never discussed in history classes. Phenomenal look into our history and social issues which are still occurring today but in different ways. 😞 8y
