Charlie, Malcolm, and Peter are comfortably settled into retirement until Alun, a professional TV Welshman, returns to Wales with his charming wife, Rhianna.
It is told from multiple points of view, by each of the old men and most of their wives. And while I do not always enjoy satire, Amis is so good at capturing the vulnerabilities of these rascally men, as well as their ingrained prejudices and sexism, that I was charmed in spite of myself.
A long time ago I read Lucky Jim and I remember it as the funniest book I had read until then. So I looked forward to this novel, that was supposed to be funny too. Well, maybe it was... for aging Welshmen in the 80s perhaps. For me now it did do little. I sometimes smiled, but overall I was mostly irritated by all the booze all of those 'devils' are drinking continually. #booker #1001books #manbooker
