G. Lewis - Florence Marryat - Richard Marsh - Michael McDowell - Christopher Priest - Forrest Reid - Bernard Taylor - Hugh Walpole 'The things were there and they were hiding in the slime; waiting . . . waiting to clutch and claw and savage' - AUNTY GREEN by John Blackburn 'The sound that came from her throat, a small, pleading cry of terror, was cut off before she'd hardly had a chance to utter it' - OUT OF SORTS by Bernard Taylor 'The words filled her with an indescribable fear, and she turned to run; but her way was blocked by a figure, gigantic in stature - and its monstrous shape moved towards her, and she knew it was the incarnation of evil itself ' - THE TERROR ON TOBIT by Charles Birkin"

I follow Valancourt Books on Twitter and they said this was one of their all time scariest stories. I can see why. The way Michael McDowell can write a character you really like and have them fall victim to another person‘s jealousy in the witchiest of backwater swamp ways is something that while typing this still gnaws at my thoughts. Also, I picked it because years ago one of my favorite Litsy experiences was reading and discussing 👇🏼

Reggie McDowell‘s book, The Elementals, with @Cinfhen and a bunch of other people. I‘m excited to pick up the Henry book and join again this weekend. 2y
LeahBergen I loved reading The Elementals with everyone, too! I have The Amulet waiting on my shelves. Have you read that one? 2y
Cinfhen That was a really fun buddy read!!! And the book was wild!!!! So happy you‘re joining @BarbaraBB and myself for 2y
batsy I loved The Elementals group read, too! That book still stands out for me. 2y
vivastory I see that the kindle of this is only a couple of bucks. Sold! I've been reading a lot of short stories lately, so this is perfect. 2y

Pickpick

I love Valancourt Press, which specializes in neglected authors of gothic, horror and weird fiction. Two stories that stood out? California Burning is about a man who can't get his dead father's bones to turn to ash during cremation. Unexpectedly moving. The Head and the Hand is about a man who has a very popular live show that involves his body and I can't say any more. A story you might find in a Black Mirror episode....shudder!
