Finding Ultra
Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World's Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself | Rich Roll
7 posts | 20 read | 7 to read
Finding Ultra is Rich Rolls incredible-but-true account of achieving one of the most awe-inspiring midlife physical transformations ever. One cool evening in October 2006, the night before he was to turn forty, Rich experienced a chilling glimpse of his future. Nearly fifty pounds overweight at the time and unable to climb the stairs without stopping, he could see where his current sedentary lifestyle was taking him. Most of us, when granted such a moment of clarity, look the other waybut not Rich. Plunging into a new way of eating that made processed foods off-limits and that prioritized plant nutrition, and vowing to train daily, Rich morphedin a matter of mere monthsfrom out-of-shape midlifer to endurance machine. When one morning ninety days into his physical overhaul, Rich left the house to embark on a light jog and found himself running a near marathon, he knew he had to scale up his goals. How many of us take up a sport at age forty and compete for the title of the worlds best within two years? Finding Ultra recounts Richs remarkable journey to the starting line of the elite Ultraman competition, which pits the worlds fittest humans against each other in a 320-mile ordeal of swimming, biking, and running. And following that test, Rich conquered an even greater one: the Epic5five Ironman-distance triathlons, each on a different Hawaiian island, all completed in less than a week. But Finding Ultra is much more than an edge-of-the-seat look at a series of jaw-dropping athletic featsand much more than a practical training manual for those who would attempt a similar transformation. Yes, Richs account rivetsand, yes, it instructs, providing information that will be invaluable to anyone who wants to change their physique. But this book is most notable as a powerful testament to human resiliency, for as we learn early on, Richs childhood posed numerous physical and social challenges, and his early adulthood featured a fierce battle with alcoholism. Ultimately, Finding Ultra is a beautifully written portrait of what willpower can accomplish. It challenges all of us to rethink what were capable of and urges us, implicitly and explicitly, to go for it.

I was searching for books that are motivational and this book kept popping up as one to read. I'm loving it. It is definitely inspiring me in my quest to not give up and just morph into a ball of laziness. 😅 It's so much harder these days to lose weight and get into shape now that I'm in my 40s. It can get super frustrating!
Any other books you can recommend?

mjtwo I enjoyed Born to Run and the Perfect Mile (more about runners than running, I suppose) - and watching the Olympics is pretty motivating for us! (edited) 3y
bookishdawg Mile Markers by Kristin Armstrong 👍🏻 3y
ItsAnotherJen @bookishdawg @mjtwo Thanks for the recommendations! 😊 I'll look into all 3 of them. 3y

Chronicling how Rich Roll became the man he is today with many MANY bumps in the road, from self isolation/low self esteem, finding his path only to discard it for alcoholism, marrying someone who wasn‘t speaking to him, a long stint in rehab, health that left him gasping for air after a flight of stairs to emerge as a legend and a plant powered athlete.
2 complaints ⬇️

5feet.of.fury More of a vegan zealot than the animal rights crowd, and he considers the DUIs and brushes with the law he walked away from with no consequence as “someone looking out for him” instead of... privilege. For as much introspection as there is, that was notably missed. 3y

I‘ve been taking my book about running to run 🏃‍♀️ Really enjoying this one, #audiorunning #audiowalking The first half is his early years swimming, college years that started his alcoholism, hitting rock bottom before changing his life. It has its dark moments but there‘s enough humor and self awareness mixed in to bare it.

Now that Diet Cults has taught me how to pronounce “satiety” and I‘m over 1/2 way done. What‘s next? Finding Ultra and hope that it gets me back on track with my 10k training plan? 😂 or back to comedy?
