A Christmas Message | Anne Perry
7 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
In the spirit of the season, New York Times bestselling author Anne Perry presents readers with the gift of another holiday mystery, taking them to the Holy Land for an intriguing and miraculous journey of discovery. The year is 1900, and Victor Narraway is giving his wife, Vespasia, an unforgettable Christmas present--a trip to Jerusalem. Vespasia is enchanted by the exotic landscape of Palestine, and charmed by a fellow traveler the Narraways meet at their hotel in Jaffa. But when the man is murdered over a torn piece of ancient parchment he was taking to Jerusalem, Victor and Vespasia risk their lives to finish his mission and deliver the puzzling document to its home. Pursued by a shadowy figure with evil intent, they embark on a dangerous yet ultimately enlightening pilgrimage to the holy city, where the mysterious message on the parchment may finally be revealed. Rich in suspense and wonder, A Christmas Message is at once a breathtaking adventure story and a poignant meditation on faith and spirituality. Praise for the Christmas novels of Anne Perry "Perry's Victorian-era holiday mysteries [are] an annual treat."--The Wall Street Journal A Christmas Escape "Rivals the classic murder mysteries of Dame Agatha Christie . . . The suspense is built up so well."--Bookreporter A New York Christmas "A thoroughly enjoyable mystery set against the wonderful historical backdrop of 1904 New York City at Christmastime."--Library Journal (starred review) A Christmas Hope "Very much recommended . . . a wonderful story."--Historical Novel Review A Christmas Garland "In Anne Perry's gifted hands, the puzzle plays out brilliantly."--Greensboro News & Record A Christmas Homecoming "Could have been devised by Agatha Christie . . . Mehso-so

Vespasia and Narraway are on a Christmas trip to Israel, when a man they befriended is murdered. They decide to take on his mission as his dying wish. My mom gave this to me saying it was a book of hope and it can be taken that way. Really, the author tries to be too mysterious and vague in it all.

Mehso-so

Maybe it was just me, but I felt that the book was trying too hard to get a message across. I'm also wondering if maybe I missed something - I don't quite get the motives of the "bad guy." Not a bad read, but missing something for me.

Argh! Just as I'm getting to the good part, I find a whole 16-page signature missing!

beagle.mama That's crap. 💩 7y
brilliantglow That is a serious printing error😵🖓 7y
Tanner @beagle.mama I know, right‽ Now I have to go through the hassle of exchanging it (and fighting the urge to go do it right now!). 7y

Tanner @brilliantglow Well, bindery error, anyway - the signature was likely printed, but somehow got missed on the bindery machine. I've seen instances where a signature is missed and the next one duplicated, but never just a signature missing. Argh! 7y
brilliantglow How frustrating. I'd have to go exchange it right now haha so I could continue reading it. 7y
Tanner @brilliantglow Part of me really wants to but it's dark and due to rain (I hate driving in the rain at night), the store isn't that close, and I will be near two stores in the chain tomorrow. So I'm trying to be practical. But still - argh! 7y
brilliantglow It's hard to be practical in this kind of situation, so good for you 👏 7y
Joybishoptx I would buy the ebook. Or get another copy somewhere close. I'm ridiculous though 7y
Tanner @brilliantglow Thanks; it is hard though, and so goes against my primal feelings! 7y
Tanner @Joybishoptx No, no, not ridiculous - just a bookaholic! I just figure I can wait it out until tomorrow - I have a slew of other books I can start reading in the meantime. 😳 7y
Tanner @Well-ReadNeck 😫indeed! 7y
OSChamberlain I've never seen anything like that! 7y
brilliantglow It would go against mine too. I'd be out the door so fast lol but the bookstore is only 15 minutes from my house. 7y

Reviewsbylola Noooooooooo 😱 7y
Reviewsbylola Did you start reading and think wait a minute, what the hell?? 🤔 Or did you see the page numbers first? 7y
Tanner @Reviewsbylola I did read all of page 88 then went to the next page and said "What the hell‽" Except I think I replaced "hell" with a word starting with "f" ? 7y
Tanner @jmtrivera @BethFishReads @OSChamberlain Yeah, not the sort of thing you want to see in a book you're currently reading. Although it's a little funny. 7y
BethFishReads I would be mad, still it mad me laugh 7y
Tanner @BethFishReads Hopefully I'm laughing after I exchange it tomorrow (there had better not be any problems getting it exchanged). I was mad, but can't get too mad - the critters don't like it when I'm mad or upset. ❤🐶🐱❤ 7y

Day 2 #ReadJanuary #JanuaryTBR - I don't really think I'll get through all of these, and they're not in order, and of course I may change it tomorrow, depending on what else crosses my radar. But so far, this is the plan.

Liatrek I am a huge Outlander fan hope you like Echo in the bones 😊 (edited) 7y
Tanner @Liatrek I've thoroughly enjoyed the previous ones. I tend to forget what happened previously, but just plow through anyway! 7y

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to those who celebrate! Happy Sunday to those who do not! A special thanks to @Seekingtardis for the wonderful #SecretSantaBookSwap gifts! A cute new bag I can use for library hauls, a coloring book to accompany audiobooks, and fabulous bookmarks that can replace the random bits of paper I usually use for bookmarks!

RinaBrahmbhattBarot Beautiful and thoughtful gifts! Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 7y

I read her Christmas books every year. It's the closest thing I have to a guilty pleasure.
