Rey of Hope: Feminism, Symbolism and Hidden Gems in Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Rey of Hope: Feminism, Symbolism and Hidden Gems in Star Wars: The Force Awakens | Valerie Estelle Frankel
2 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
The new Star Wars: The Force Awakens offers a world of diversity - its heroes span the races and genders. Yet under this, there's much to explore - Rey is a butt-kicking heroine, but some might say she's so overpowered she has no challenges left. Others might observe that from her clothes and skills to her friends and enemies, she's excelling more at the hero's journey than the heroine's. Does Finn undergo the classic hero's journey, or is his too subverted? There are fascinating symbols as well, as Kylo Ren's lightsaber is as unstable as he is, while perception and sight dominate the story arc. From themes to novels and comics, this book explores the hidden depths of the series, revealing them for fans to enjoy. An unauthorized guide.

Mehso-so

I appreciated the explanation between an average hero's quest vs a heroine's...and Star Wars' adherence and subversion of those classic story arcs. I'd never really thought about the fact that a hero usually can't wait to leave on adventure and are held back by family (Luke) vs a heroine's fight to stay home & find family and being pulled away unwillingly (Rey). I'm reminded again that I need to read A Hero Has A Thousand Faces by Joesph Campbell.

#TBRTuesday and halfway through my #NaNoReadMo, it is slow going on the in-depth reading this month (way too many distractions for me), but I've been able to check off a bunch of short stories and comics from my list...and currently working on the Walking Dead Compendium, Rey of Hope, and All the Single Ladies. I had to put down Hard Choices for a bit, I'm hoping to buck up and get back to it and wrap it up yet this month, we'll see.

GeekGrl82 Lamb will make you laugh do hard! Underground Railroad is one of my favorites of this year, and Station Eleven one of my favorites of last year. 8y
Matilda In The Country We Love is in top 5 of my favorite 2016 books 💙 and that's a great list! 8y
Suet624 I loved Lamb too. 8y

Gezemice What a great list! I agree, Lamb is awesome. And I still have not gotten to Blind Assassin, either! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GeekGrl82 Good to know there are some good ones coming up! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice Me either, some of the more intense reads I'm finding myself suddenly not rushing to read...I returned The Men We Reaped to the library unread, for instance. I'm sure I'll check it out another time, but I just wasn't in the mood for deeply emotional reading at the moment. 8y
GeekGrl82 In the Country We Love is today's Audible book of the day, for $3.95. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GeekGrl82 I saw that, but I bought it already! Hopefully other people will pick it up today while it's on sale. 8y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yeah, you said it right - I am not up for emotionally difficult reads, either. I think I am putting it off till next year. 8y
