The Green Knight
The Green Knight | Iris Murdoch
7 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
Full of suspense, humor, and symbolism, this magnificently crafted and magical novel replays biblical and medieval themes in contemporary London. An attempt by the sharp, feral, and uncommonly intelligent Lucas Graffe to murder his sensual and charismatic half-brother Clement is interrupted by a stranger—whom Lucas strikes and leaves for dead. When the stranger mysteriously reappears, with specific demands for reparation, the Graffes’ circle of idiosyncratic family and friends is disrupted—for the demands are bizarre, intrusive, and ultimately fatal.

Pickpick

You'll get more out of this if you know the story/myth of the Green Knight, and can read Latin, French and Italian, but even without those things it is a wonderful read. It's dense with meaning and symbolism and the writing is superb. I kept thinking she was wrapping the novel up, and she'd be off in another direction. Give yourself time to dig deeply - this is not a book to be sped through. #LitsyAtoZ #letterG

"What brings down dictators, what has liberated eastern Europe? Most of all a passionate hunger for truth, for the truth about their past, and for the justice which truth begets."
Everything I read comes back to current events!

It took me over 80 pages to get interested in the story. I'm at 187 and I'm still not sure what's going on, and Harvey just annoys me. But I think I will #persist. #murdoch #whatsgoingon
