I have no idea how or where I stumbled upon this book but I‘m so glad I did! Fans of “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” and Garrison Keillor will appreciate the themes and the storytelling. Reading the descriptions of Trevanian‘s other books, I‘m not sure if I‘ll continue reading his stuff but this one was a good read. Full disclosure though, I did just skim the chapter “Love on Pearl Street”, and got the gist on what 11 year old Jean-Luc got up to 🤭🙄

AmyG I read his books in High School….The Eiger Sanction being a wonderful book. This one sounds so different. (edited) 2w
Aims42 @AmyG I‘ll add that one to my list 🙂👍 1w

Very well-written and mostly engaging but the details! The details! Could have been cut by at least a third! I understand this book was published the same year Trevanian died, so maybe that's why the nostalgia seems relentless.

The neighbors and experiences could have been Any City, USA. I grew up in Chicago and could relate to the local store, the alleys, the harsh walks to school and amazing neighbors. The timeframe was different since he was a child of the Depression. Yet, there was a lot to relate to as a youth.
