Letters to Sartre
Letters to Sartre | Simone de Beauvoir, Quintin Hoare
2 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
In these letters, de Beauvoir tells Sartre everything, tracing the extraordinary complications of their triangular love life; they reveal her not only as manipulative and dependent, but also as vulnerable, passionate, jealous, and committed.

The only thing I've read by either of these Parisians is Simone de Beauvoir's A Very Easy Death. What should I read next by her or by Sartre?

Lcsmcat No Exit by Sartre was a favorite of mine in high school but I'm not sure how it plays to a non-angsty adult. Do you read French or are you looking for translations? 7y
Lindy @Lcsmcat Thanks for the recommendation, and for the angst warning. Sometimes I'm in the mood for that. I do read French, so either originals or translations are fine. 7y
Lcsmcat Mémoires d'une jeune fille rangée is a good one by de Beauvoir. I don't know what it's called in translation so I didn't recommend it until I knew you read French. 7y

Lindy @Lcsmcat Merci! 7y
batsy The Mandarins is the only fiction I've read by her so far. It was excellent and absorbing. Lots to ruminate on. A thinky book ☺️ 7y
Lindy @batsy Thanks. I like thinky books. 👍 7y
Hobbinol When my partner and I met (37 years ago!) we bonded over a discussion about Sartre's Nausea! It's funny that book will always hold a special place in my heart😆❤️❗️Of course no exit holds the famous line: l'enfer c'est les autres. My partner-- who has read much more de Beauvoir than I have recommends her memoires (he is very proud of his first editions), and The Second Sex. And Sartre's Being and Nothingness is of course quite an undertaking. 7y
Hobbinol @batsy Thinky Books! Isn't that a Broadway play?... no wait...that's Kinky Boots...never mind 😶 7y
batsy @Hobbinol 😂 I'd watch a play called Kinky Thinky Books 7y
Lindy @batsy @Hobbinol Kinky Thinky Books — YES! 7y
Lindy @Hobbinol I love knowing that literature was the source of the first bond you made with your partner. And thank you for all of the encouragement to read both Sartre and de Beauvoir. 😘 7y
