Eight White Nights
Eight White Nights: A Novel | André Aciman
18 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
A LUSHLY ROMANTIC NOVEL FROM THE AUTHOR OF CALL ME BY YOUR NAME Eight White Nights is an unforgettable journey through that enchanted terrain where passion and fear and the sheer craving to ask for love and to show love can forever alter who we are. A man in his late twenties goes to a large Christmas party in Manhattan where a woman introduces herself with three words: "I am Clara." Over the following seven days, they meet every evening at the same cinema. Overwhelmed yet cautious, he treads softly and won't hazard a move. The tension between them builds gradually, marked by ambivalence, hope, and distrust. As André Aciman explores their emotions with uncompromising accuracy and sensuous prose, they move both closer together and farther apart, culminating on New Year's Eve in a final scene charged with magic and the promise of renewal. Call Me by Your Name, Aciman's debut novel, established him as one of the finest writers of our time, an expert at the most sultry depictions of longing and desire. As The Washington Post Book World wrote, "The beauty of Aciman's writing and the purity of his passions should place this extraordinary first novel within the canon of great romantic love stories for everyone." Aciman's piercing and romantic new novel is a brilliant performance from a master prose stylist.

Mehso-so

Less of a so-so and more of an I have no idea! I definitely have a love hate relationship with this one, a marmite kinda book😂 The prose is an absolute pick but I found myself finding the book really entertaining and wonderful at points...and at other points just really annoying😂

'Third Night' read & I'm still loving the prose; I'm hoping the plot might pick up a bit more so soon though because it's slightly lacking for me atm

#WinterGames2021 #TeamGameSleighers

Moll I think I've changed my mind; once again the prose has sucked me in and I'm liking the slow pacing. I'm finding myself having all the same feelings towards Clara that the main guy (can't for the life of me remember his name, or if I've been told it😂) is 3y

We don't have a star or whatever on top of our tree so I've edited on this little cat reading a book😂

That's the 'Second Night' read and I must say I'm starting to love this - the things that were annoying me about the 2 main characters have become entertaining & endearing. I love the connection they're starting to form too and how that's playing out. The prose remains to be really beautiful

Okay I've finished reading about 'the first night' & am now about 100 pages in...and I have to say this has massively grown on me! The main guy is still incredibly dramatic lol and Clara remains to be quite pretentious and annoying...but the prose has me completely sucked in! Plus I'm finding LOADS of words for the #WGWordSearch haha

I'm reading Eight White Nights today and hoping to finish it in the next couple! So far the prose is rich but it's being used to describe the inner monologue of the most dramatic guy in the world😂 We've just had about 3 pages of him having a mare bc he ate something spicy and the girl he likes saw his reaction😂 Said girl also thinks she's Too Cool For School and I'm not entirely sure what he's seeing in her

Pickpick

I adore Andre Aciman so much - even though I didn‘t like the characters in this one, and I found the plot a little silly (it‘s definitely not as good as Call Me By Your Name or Enigma Variations) - the prose was just so breathtaking this can only be a pick.

In Edinburgh airport for what might be a very long evening... my flight yesterday was cancelled so I rebooked for today, but the only other flight to Gatwick is over 3 hours late and I‘m dreading when I‘ll actually get home. I‘m exhausted and sick and just want my bed more than anything!

I‘ve got André Aciman with me at least - this one isn‘t as good as CMBYN or Enigma Variations so far but he could write a shopping list and I‘d adore it!

BarbaraBB That sounds like a horrible evening. Hope you made it home by now! 6y
Emilymdxn @barbarabb finally made it yeah! Thank you lovely! At least the book was good... 6y

This book was touted as being a “modern day NYC fairy tale.†I found this book tedious and the two main characters unlikeable. I‘ve been in relationships with someone very much like the narrator and it‘s exhausting, which is exactly how I felt reading this book. He was too insecure, needy, immature and petulant. I honestly couldn‘t wait for my time with him to be over (and his love interest wasn‘t much better). Not the book for me.

Giving myself this gift this morning before I start working. The house is quiet and I am reading in my favorite spot, which is nice & sunny today, and enjoying my cup of coffee. My #happyplace. No school for the kids because of dangerous icy conditions so this may be the only quiet moment of my day. Supposed to get above freezing today for the first time in several days!

Louise Sounds perfect! I love reading when I'm the only one up! 7y

Grocery shopping done with hubby on this bitter cold day, so we treated ourselves to a coffee from my favorite coffee shop (Coffee Coffee, which happens to be just across the parking lot from the grocery). Going to spend a little time enjoying myself before heading back into the bitter cold for an appointment.

Happy Friday! Enjoying a Raven Special Lager in The Raven koozie and reading my book (while the dog slumbers in the chair across from me because his life is EXHAUSTING). Stay warm my Litten friends! â¤ï¸ðŸ˜ŠðŸ“šðŸ¶

I am finding this stream of consciousness tedious and difficult to wade through. Every once in a while there‘s a gem of relationship insight that I know to be true from personal experience (such as the selection here) or something interesting passes between the characters that draws be back in. This book is dragging between those moments though.

This book is slow going at the start. But I‘m pushing through with my reading partner, Hamilton the miniature poodle. He hasn‘t left my side all day. â¤ï¸

Spending my day like this before it‘s back to the real world tomorrow. First book of 2018, purchased last January on a literary trip to NYC with one of my besties. We visited several bookstores and purchased one book at each one. This was my bargain find from the Strand. Perfect for this cold New Year‘s Day! #clearingmybookshelves
