"You forget. You forget you don't really exist here, that this isn't your home." Since emigrating from Bangladesh, fourteen-year-old Nadira and her family have been living in New York City on expired visas, hoping to realize their dream of becoming legal U.S. citizens. But after 9/11, everything changes. Suddenly being Muslim means you are dangerous -- a suspected terrorist. When Nadira's father is arrested and detained at the U.S.-Canadian border, Nadira and her older sister, Aisha, are told to carry on as if everything is the same. The teachers at Flushing High don't ask any questions, but Aisha falls apart. Nothing matters to her anymore -- not even college. It's up to Nadira to be the strong one and bring her family back together again.

Nadira came to New York with her family at five years old. Though their visas have expired, Nadira's parents haven't given up hope that they will be able to become legal citizens. And then 9/11 happens and all Muslims are suspected terrorists.

When we read headlines screaming about illegal aliens, it's easy to forget that immigrants are real human beings with hopes and dreams who are trying to do their best for their families.

Centique Wow Debbie you have done so many great reviews! You should really have more followers 😊 Have you thought of maybe joining a photo challenge to get more visibility? No worries if that's not your thing! 7y
Deborah42 Thanks! I just started using Litsy during the last Dewey's Readathon. 7y

Finally finished my first #fitreaders audiobook for the year! Never too late to start walking!

This story is a very real, very relevant immigrant story. It is 10 years old, but it could have been written yesterday (it does use the terminology "illegal alien" which does date it). But it is told from a voice that is authentic, giving readers the opportunity to feel the realities of her family's struggles and empathize.

I have made the infamous "take care of myself" resolution this year. A couple years ago I started listening to audiobooks while I walked and it was effective (until I got lazy). So i am bringing that back. With some new routines, I fee like this can help keep me on track this year. Here's to new habits in 2017!
