Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere
Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere | Julie T. Lamana
7 posts | 12 read | 9 to read
Armani Curtis can think about only one thing: her tenth birthday. All her friends are coming to her party, her mama is making a big cake, and she has a good feeling about a certain wrapped box. Turning ten is a big deal to Armani. It means she's older, wiser, more responsible. But when Hurricane Katrina hits the Lower Nines of New Orleans, Armani realizes that being ten means being brave, watching loved ones die, and mustering all her strength to help her family weather the storm. A powerful story of courage and survival, Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere celebrates the miraculous power of hope and love in the face of the unthinkable.

Wow! This book took you on a roller coaster of emotions! You start off slow but then it picks up, FAST! You get introduced to heartwarming characters! Also I would be lying if I said that I didn't cry! Yes this story is sad, but it's also a story about a hurricane! I recommend this book to 10 year olds and up! Any age really! My grandma read it too and loved it! #wow #great #aMUSTread

This was recommended to me by a sixth grader. He really liked it,as do I. A story of a family caught unawares by Katrina.

LauraJ @Nebklvr I just got a five-week-old foster kitty today and the first thing I did was trim his claws. Poor guy kept getting stuck on everything. 7y

Armani lives in the 9th ward with her parents, 4 siblings, and her grandmother. Because they've heard it all before, the family doesn't evacuate under the threat of Hurricane Katrina. The storm is horrible. The flooding is worse when the levees break. This story follows the days immediately before, during, and after the flood. Really hard to read parts of it. Not for younger readers because of tough situations. (especially if you're in LA)

So I'm never reading just one book. The title in the blurb is one I'm reading at school when I model quiet reading time. The other 4 are at home. Poetry and comedy are my night reads. #currentread #riotgrams @Liberty

Perhaps the most emotionally charged book I've ever read. Highly recommended.
