How to Make a Cherry Pie and See the U.S.A. | Marjorie Priceman
2 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
IN THIS EXUBERANT companion story to How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World, our young baker sets her sights on a cherry pie. She heads off on a round-the-U.S.A. journey to find all the materials she needs to stock her kitchen: New Mexico for clay (mixing bowl), Washington for wood (rolling pin), Hawaii for sand (sand? to make the glass for her measuring cup, of course). In joyful art filled with small vignettes and sly humor, two-time Caldecott Honor winner Marjorie Priceman takes us on a cross country journey by riverboat, taxi, bus, train, planeall in search of the natural resources of our country. Includes a brightly painted endpaper map of the U.S.A.and a recipe for cherry pie, of course!

Since the Cook Shop is closed, the reader is taken on a journey across America to gather natural resources to make the utensils needed to bake a cherry pie. This RF book would be a good way to introduce natural resources or the states in the US. Here's some ways this book can be used across many subject areas https://www.randomhouse.com/catalog/teachers_guides/9780375812552.pdf #UCFLAE3414su17

melissaallam Social studies is a subject that I feel isn't covered enough in the primary grades. This is a perfect way to cover geography and culture through reading. 7y
Ashleywwolfe I've never heard of this book but OMG ❤️ kids love food! And it would be cool to see how other different students with cultural diverse backgrounds make their fav desserts/pies for text to self connections:) 7y
casandraopont @Jerricajay I love this book! What a great way to teach students about agriculture. I mean, who doesn't want to know about pie? I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. 7y

This is was my pick when I had to read out loud to my son's 3rd grade class. The kids loved it, and I even heard the teacher chuckle once or twice.

Godmotherx5 That's sounds perfect for my 8-year-old niece. I'll be on a mission to find it tomorrow. 8y
