This award winning HF is about a young boy "Shorty" who is sent to an internment camp after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Shorty and his father build a baseball diamond to boost morale around the camp. Check out this teacher guide for tips on pre reading, discussions for during and after the book, and lots more! https://www.leeandlow.com/images/pdfs/baseball.pdf #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding Another fabulous book to integrate SS and literacy! Beautiful story! 7y
DrSpalding I just noticed that your resource includes the idea of having students keep a readers response journal. That is exactly what we are doing in class with our readings. Very cool resource. You should notice that it looks similar in format to the expectations put forth in your read aloud assignment. Vocabulary, setting a purpose, questions… This is an example of a best practice lesson. 7y
Jerricajay @DrSpalding Yes I love the ideas in this lesson. I found it on the publishers website! 7y
tfundora Oh wow this looks like such a good read!! Great resources! 7y
Diana_S I remember reading this book in elementary school, I have been looking for it every where! I loved this book and how the characters try to find joy in hard times. 7y

This NF (B) teaches about women who changed the world because of their inventions. The last pages of the book give info on obtaining patents for your own inventions & give resources of organizations/contests that encourage young people to be creative. This would be a great book when teaching science. Heres NSTA's list of outstanding science trade books for other quality gems http://www.nsta.org/publications/ostb/ostb2016.aspx #UCFLAE3414su17

SamanthaPuglisi I love the concept of this book and that it gives advice on how to take action if you have an idea for an invention. I can really see it inspiring children to follow their dreams! 7y
DrSpalding This reminds me of She Persisted. What a fabulous book for STEM classes! NSTAs list of notable Science titles is a good resource too! 7y
Ashleywwolfe This reminds me of She Persisted as well @DrSpalding ! It would also make for a good unit project assignment for class if everyone or small groups were able to chose a figure from the book for explore further. 7y
Chanelamber Nice! I believe that this would be a great read for little girls - I'll have to add this to my stack! 7y

Since the Cook Shop is closed, the reader is taken on a journey across America to gather natural resources to make the utensils needed to bake a cherry pie. This RF book would be a good way to introduce natural resources or the states in the US. Here's some ways this book can be used across many subject areas https://www.randomhouse.com/catalog/teachers_guides/9780375812552.pdf #UCFLAE3414su17

Chanelamber Nice! I'll definitely have to pick this book up an check it out. I love food so I'm sure I'll enjoy this book. 😌 7y
Angiepuc This book could also incorporate some social studies lessons! 7y
DrSpalding Geography concerning the travel and math concerning the baking… This book can be used to teach multiple content areas! 🗺 7y

melissaallam Social studies is a subject that I feel isn't covered enough in the primary grades. This is a perfect way to cover geography and culture through reading. 7y
Ashleywwolfe I've never heard of this book but OMG ❤️ kids love food! And it would be cool to see how other different students with cultural diverse backgrounds make their fav desserts/pies for text to self connections:) 7y
casandraopont @Jerricajay I love this book! What a great way to teach students about agriculture. I mean, who doesn't want to know about pie? I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. 7y

LOVED this NF about America's first transcontinental railroad! A family is heading West hoping for a new life. Every page is dense with details of their trip, from sounds to speed, and has wonderful illustrations to go with it, including this diagram of a steam engine in the back. The authors website has some a good curriculum guide as well http://d28hgpri8am2if.cloudfront.net/tagged_assets/12839_locomotive%20curriculum... #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding This NF book is a valuable addition to any social studies unit regarding transportation and American history. This resource notes common core standards that can be met using this book. High-quality nonfiction! 7y
SamanthaPuglisi I want to read this! The resource is amazing. I love how many ideas there are and that they align to specific standards. 7y

This great P book is a personal favorite pulled from my own collection. Shel Silverstein invited children to dream and dare to imagine the impossible. I love his style of writing and illustrations. His website has great writing activities/discussions aligned with the Common Core http://www.shelsilverstein.com/media/learning/resource_files/Giving_Tree_Anniver... #UCFLAE3414su17

Angiepuc I have so many memories with this book. My mom use to read me a few pages before bed. Could see it being used it the classroom when we have a few minutes between transitions 7y
DrSpalding A fantastic book to share with students accompanied by an excellent resource from the author's site. 7y
melissaallam I used to read this over and over again as a child! I could see creating a class poetry book of short poems inspired by Mr. Silverstein. (edited) 7y
SamanthaPuglisi Your description of the book is beautiful! I loved this book as a child and having short poems didn't overwhelm me as a reader. 7y

I loved this RF book! When Sophie gets really angry, she climbs her favorite tree. This book acknowledges different people handle anger in different ways, which is a wonderful lesson to learn. The author is big on channeling anger to create art & has some teaching tips/ activities on her website to help you do the same in your classroom http://www.mollybang.com/Pages/sophie_act.html #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding By honoring this book in class, YOU checked it out! This makes me proud @Jerricajay Great job going to the author's site! 👏🏼 7y
Chanelamber Nice! Like we have discussed as a class books like this are great for children to work on finding solutions to calming down. The illustration made me giggle too. Lol 7y

This (F) book is about a duck who is forced to do all the work on the farm while the fat farmer lays in bed all day. This duck works himself to the bone, and when the other farm animals see he's at his wits end, they hatch a plan. This book can be reread and used as a tool in many subject areas and is also available in many languages. Check out some of these teaching ideas www.teachingideas.co.uk/library/books/farmer-duck #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding Your resource not only introduces the reader to the author but also provides detailed information about the book that you could use align to Language Arts Florida Standards. This would make for a great book to compare and contrast to the classic TL book The Little Red Hen. 7y

This F book is about Owen his favorite yellow blanket, Fuzzy. Owen's parents are worried- soon Owen will start school and he can't take it with him, but Owen isn't ready to part ways yet. The author makes this book very relatable, since everyone can think back to their beloved childhood possession. Check out the authors teaching guide http://www.kevinhenkes.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/World-of-Kevin-Henkes-2011... #UCFLAE3414su17

SamanthaPuglisi This reminds me of the Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems. The child in that story loses their favorite stuffed animal. It's great to show students that they don't need to have any item as a crutch. 7y
DrSpalding Your post caused a peer to make a text to text connection. This is fabulous. I like that you went straight to the source and use the author's website as your resource. Great work! 7y
