Shadow
Shadow | Blaise Cendrars
7 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
Shadow lives in the forest... It goes forth at night to prowl around the fires. It even likes to mingle with the dancers... Shadow... It waves with the grasses, curls up at the foot of trees...But in the African experience Shadow is much more. The village storytellers and shamans of an Africa that is passing into memory called forth for the poet Blaise Cendrars an eerie image, shifting between the beliefs of the present and the spirits of the past. Shadow... It does not cry out, it has no voice... It can cast a spell over you... It follows man everywhere, even to war...Marcia Brown's stunning illustrations in collage, inspired by her travels in Africa, evoke the atmosphere and drama of a life now haunted, now enchanted by Shadow.

This novel is beautifully illustrated and written in poem form. “Shadow“ is about a make-believe character representing the idea of imaginary characters/ideas. This book is very descriptive and as we all know children love to pretend and play in imaginative ways. I think this book would definitely draw students' attention but I would not use it to support a lesson.

“Shadow itself has no shadow.” Shadow is an interesting P book that is translated and illustrated by Marcia Brown. This Caldecott winning book described in short poems what a shadow is and does. This book can be used for CR or RA. https://www.steamsational.com/shadow-activities/ is a great resource that helps students explore their own shadows. #UCFLAE3414SP20

VictoriaG https://www.steamsational.com/shadow-activities/ is a great resource that helps students explore their own shadows. Comparing what we learned in the story with our own experiences helps us achieve UDL 3.1-Activate or supply background knowledge. When starting the project it would also be good to implement ESOL List the most important words and phrases you use or plan to use in a
presentation on a transparency or on the chalkboard.

“Shadow itself has no shadow”. This quote shows how deep this book is and how wise the words are written on the page.

This story was a very interesting read. It‘s a very deep book and would be understood on different levels depending on what age you read it to. Nevertheless, it‘s a very interesting book and I would read this to a class.

Award: Caldecott
Review: This book is based off of African folklore. It is about the mysterious happenings of a shadow. This story tells the reader about the characteristics of the shadow; how it forms, how it moves, where it lives, and how the shadow is unstoppable at all times of the day.
