Snugville Street
Snugville Street: The Sun Reaps What the Rain Has Sown | Angeline King
4 posts | 1 read | 5 to read
A heart-warming family drama set in post-conflict Belfast. The story begins in 2003 when Hannah learns that her father's return from prison will collide with her French exchange. A tapestry of love and loss is woven through humour and heart-ache as we move from Belfast to Paimpol in Brittany on a powerful journey of shame and redemption.

Pickpick

I'm glad I picked up this book yesterday at the library. It was filled with memorable, vivid characters and crackling and funny dialogue. This is a first novel from a local Northern Irish author, and I found some of the descriptions to be a bit clunky or cliched. Overall this book was warm, funny, and sad. It would appeal to fans of Maeve Binchy.

The subtitle is The Sun Reaps What The Rain Has Sown.

I like that.

"It's an illness. Imagine you were diabetic. You'd take your insulin every day, wouldn't you? It's like that only the sugar is a sadness."

The sugar is a sadness. ?

"Perhaps the reason why her mum was the life and soul of Snugville Street was that her husband was behind bars. Jean Adams, who had lived trauma throughout every step of her life, sucked up unhappiness like a hoover. If she didn't say 'cheer up, love', a hundred times a day, she said something beginning with f."

(Hoover = vacuum cleaner in Northern Ireland.)

One of our local libraries is having an event to celebrate local (Northern Irish) emerging authors. There was a lovely display with these three books, so I grabbed them all! They're nicely colour coordinated, aren't they?

The event is on 7 March so I'd better get cracking!
