Michael Morpurgo is the master of introducing the tragedies of history to children in a compassionate and unpatronising way.
Toro! Toro! is set in Spain at the onset of the Spanish Civil War. This book is about 6 year-old Antonito's relationship with a bull calf he has raised, as well as how the war affects him personally.
Appropriate for children over the age of 8, it is a story of persistence and strength in the face of adversity.
JillR I have to say, much as I love his writing, I have semi-boycotted Michael Morpurgo as EVERY book I've read has had me absolutely sobbing and I can't take it! (Certainly not when reading aloud to the kids anyway!) 8y

Libby1 I understand, @JillR . My son is still a bit too young for many of his books but I'm just preparing myself for years to come! 8y
JillR @Libby1 I've read a few with my eldest and picked up a collection of short stories about animals for my youngest. Oh my goodness, the first one was about a much loved cat who died and we were both so traumatised we couldn't read on! Not good with sad stories I'm afraid 😬 8y
