Summer‘s here in my country, I can feel it - mostly because Sunday was utterly sweltering. Decided to chill out with a #horror novel set in the British moors and a turmeric-galangal cooler, made by mixing cold soda water with a tonic from a local apothecary. I enjoy gingery-citrusy drinks when the weather gets hot, and this and the book really hit the spot.
A friend gave this a glowing review, so I picked it up a while back and I'm giving it a try now. So far it's very readable but pretty sure I know what's going to happen, at least in broad strokes.

[Dr. Doumani] followed Shan out of the shelter to see what all the fuss was about, and swore in the most un-academic manner when she saw what had been done to the van she'd hired. The wheels had been slashed, and huge, scrawling letters had been scratched into the paintwork along one side:

so-soHonestly this was just okay for me. I liked it. It wasn't overly excited about it. It felt disjointed and a bit confusing at times. It held my attention well enough, enjoyed the blending of two worlds and such but overall it was just meh.

Now: a body is found in the area where the students went missing & an osteoarchaeologist is drafted in. She determines that the body is from the Bronze Age & not one of the missing students, but Nathan starts to be plagued with visions of the still missing students trapped somewhere. 1w
This is hands down one of the weirdest books I've ever read. It starts off normally with the disappearance but then veers off into fantasy/sci-fi territory. Now this is not a bad thing, parts of it were quite interesting, but it didn't really make a lot of sense. To me anyway. 1w
TWs: evil, cannibalism, infidelity, animal death/hunting, scenes involving a sexual element.
