Tribal
Tribal: College Football and the Secret Heart of America | Diane Roberts
1 post | 3 to read
Part introspective soul searching, part cultural analysis, Tribal tackles the controversies plaguing college athletics, tracing the dubious historical underpinnings of Americans most popular sport, offering a visceral and often funny analysis of its tribal thrills and deep contradictions. Florida States football team is always in the headlines, producing Heisman Trophy candidates, winning championships, and, at the same time, dealing with federal investigations into corruption and rape. Same as many big time collegiate sports programs. Seems no matter how the team transgresses off the field, if they excel on the field, everyone forgives them. Writer, professor and conflicted Seminole Diane Roberts looks at the problems plaguing her campus in Tallahassee, examining them within the context of college football itself and its significance in American life, and explores how the game shapes our culture.

Well I FINALLY did it. After like nine months of tiring web searches; much hemming and hawing; intense back and forth debates in my head; nights of soul searching - I settled on a sports-themed book for the Read Harder challenge. 😀✅

DGRachel Perfect! 7y
RealBooks4ever You did it! 🎉😆🌟 7y
LauraBeth @RealBooks4ever yes, but now I have to read it! 🤦‍♀️ 7y

LauraBeth @DGRachel this was not easy... 7y
DGRachel @LauraBeth LOL. There are a couple of categories that I know I will not fill in. I figure I've branched out already, read some things I wouldn't have otherwise, and that's a win. I'm not going to stress myself out over things I really just don't want to read. I won't finish the challenge, but I've experienced growth, and that's good enough for me. 😊 7y
LauraBeth @DGRachel I need to step up to your maturity level! 🤗 #goals 7y
DGRachel @LauraBeth 😂 Actually, I'm just a quitter. I've read some seriously awful stuff trying to fill in categories and after 9 months decided I'm going to read stuff I want to and only books that appeal to me. If it fills in a challenge category, awesome, if not, that's okay too. 7y
minkyb I just heard about this on the Front Porch podcast and was very interested. Cannot wait to here what you think! 7y
diovival I found one that will cross off two categories. Sports and set nearby. 7y
MemoirsForMe I read my sports book first because I knew it would be my least favorite. I wanted to get it out of the way early. 😁Wasn't as bad as I thought. 7y
Cinfhen Sounds fascinating! Can't wait to read your review 7y
LauraBeth That's a good approach @DGRachel - the older I get, the more I realize my time is finite 😀 7y
LauraBeth @minkyb excellent! I'm behind on my podcasts so I'll go and listen to this one to hear what they have to say! 😀 7y
LauraBeth @diovival I love a multiple cross-off! ✅✅✅ 7y
LauraBeth @UwannaPublishme that was smart! I'm the one who eats cake before the entree. 😀 7y
LauraBeth @Cinfhen well it's waiting for me at the library so I need to do the death march over there to go pick it up 😀 7y
