Deliver Her
Deliver Her | Patricia Perry Donovan
On the night of Alex Carmody's sixteenth birthday, she and her best friend, Cass, are victims of a terrible car accident. Alex survives; Cass doesn't. Consumed by grief, Alex starts cutting school and partying, growing increasingly detached. The future she'd planned with her friend is now meaningless to her. Meg Carmody is heartbroken for her daughter, even as she's desperate to get Alex's life back on track. The Birches, a boarding school in New Hampshire, promises to do just that, yet Alex refuses to go. But when Meg finds a bag of pills hidden in the house, she makes a fateful call to a transporter whose company specializes in shuttling troubled teens to places like The Birches, under strict supervision. Meg knows Alex will feel betrayed--as will her estranged husband, who knows nothing of Meg's plans for their daughter. When the transport goes wrong--and Alex goes missing--Meg must face the consequences of her decision and her deception. But the hunt for Alex reveals that Meg is not the only one keeping secrets.

Pickpick

A good pick for reading over a busy holiday with lots of starts & stops-->short chapters, alternating POV's.

Goodreads says mystery/suspense, which puzzles me. I actually think this is character-driven fiction; viewing it that way makes it more enjoyable. The characters are interesting enough. There is a fair amount of drama and tension. I liked some of the characters more than others (mom Meg and dad Jacob). Feels like a Lifetime Channel movie.

Pickpick

For this one I need a rating between pick & so-so. I expected more of a mystery/thriller than the family/relationship drama I got but the author had me caring about the 3 main characters-Meg, her daughter Alex & Carl, the owner/driver of the transport service hired to take Alex to a boarding school for troubled teens. There were no big surprises but it kept my attention & was a quick & mostly enjoyable read. Review & energy bar pairing link below.

Louise Thanks for the recipe! I think I'll try it! 8y
Verity @DebinHawaii I have that sometimes too - I'm not raving about a book but it's better than so-so. I like the simplicity of the options mostly though. 8y

I'm running early, my friend is running late so a cocktail and my Kindle until she arrives. This is the "...And Don't Call Me Shirley" (tequila, mescal, East India sherry, maraschino & bitters). It's described as a "smokey tequila sunrise" and it's STRONG! #birthdayslastallmonth

Lola I like your style! 💃🏻 8y
athorne Mmm, strong! Can't wait to see what you think of this one. I enjoyed it. 8y

Mehso-so

I enjoyed roughly the first 2/3 of this novel, but found myself growing less and less invested as it went on. There's a drawn out wind-down after the primary action/drama has ended, felt like everything was tied in too neat a bow at the very end. Meh.

Spent some of today listening to this. While I've enjoyed the alternating narrators, I'm finding the story pretty dull. The dialogue is difficult to believe, and the song lyrics by the fictional band that plays a big role in the plot earn the book a big 🙄. Maybe something good is coming at the end?

The story itself had lots of potential, but the flow was poor and it felt forced. There are too many questions that go unanswered, and some characters seem to exist solely to fill up space.

I was expecting more of a mystery out of this one, but I didn't get it. Even after finishing I wondered whether I had missed something. The writing wasn't great. Conversations between adults seemed forced and childlike.

athorne I totally agreed with you! 8y
Josie I try not to read the book summaries, something my mom had me start doing. However, I always go back and read them after and the whole story is basically right there! 8y
Sweettartlaura So glad I‘m bailing - I was holding out for the “mystery”, but since it‘s taking too long to get there, I‘m out. Seeing that the mystery doesn‘t amount to much makes me feel even better about it 👍🏻 5y
