I had hoped to finish this in June but this week has not been good for reading. I‘m about 40% in & enjoying it. So interesting! Hope to finish it over the weekend. I did sneak in half a chapter with my favorite desk breakfast of fried rice with an over-easy egg on top from the local diner by work.

Looking forward to finishing the day & enjoying the long Independence Day weekend. I took Tuesday off too.🎉

I wanted to like this book but it seemed to go off in so many directions that the beauty of the words on loss & grief got buried in pink feathers & black clouds. I like YA & like magical realism, I‘m not a fan of Romeo & Juliet & apparently II don‘t like it when the three are mashed together.🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks to #SundayBuddyRead I was able to finish & get it off of my #BOTM TBR at last & the discussions were fun.

#BigJuneReadathon #20in4Readathon

Did I know I needed a YA gender-swap of My Fair Lady set in the food world in 1830s London where in an imagined reign of Queen Charlotte women can become the top of society as Culinarians? No but it turns out I did! Helena Higgins is determined to graduate top of her class with a final project to make over humble street vendor Elijah Little into a Gentleman Chef with her sweet friend & fellow Culinaria student ⬇️

DebinHawaii …Penelope Pickering helping. Full of wit & charm, food competitions & romance balanced with lessons about class & ethnicity. Overall a fun take on a classic & the light escapist book I needed right now. It also made me hungry! 🤤This one found me by way of my library‘s Libby recommendations & I realized that I have the author‘s first book (described as “An Austentacious Romance”) on my Kindle & I will be moving it up my TBR. ##20in4Readathon BigJuneReadathon #BigJuneReadathonPhotoChallenge

Finished my last 90 min of this audiobook while running errands today. This is such a fun series, especially listening to Amanda Ronconi narrate Molly Harper‘s words. This is the third & I think last book maybe as although there is story left to tell about changeling Sarah/Cassandra & her friends & their #magic, it seems to have ended where it needed to. I love these characters⬇️

DebinHawaii …their sass & bravery & the magical London setting. It‘s YA paranormal but Harper‘s often snarky humor works well for adults too. A good escape read Start with the first: 7d

#BigJuneReadathon

Finished last night so it could go back to the library in time. Quirky & charming are the words I‘d use to describe this book. It made me laugh & made me tear up. The fantasy elements can get a little over the top, but I have to say that I loved the commentary from the denizens of the Maple Street Cemetery & Rasputin the fox & Moses the dog were fun too. The story touched on some heavier subjects like opioid addiction, death, ⬇️

DebinHawaii …grief, dementia, but didn‘t get bogged down in them & they made the family dynamics & friendshipsI more powerful. I adored Rabbit Cake & really enjoyed this one so I am looking forward to what Annie Hartnett writes next. 💙💙💙 1w

Finished earlier this week with the #PemberLittens. I am going to give it a pick even though I despised most of the characters. Was there a good man in the book? In all of Victorian England? I read a plot summary somewhere that stated Gilbert matures, redeems himself & becomes a better man in the end. I disagree-it was still all about “me, me, me” & it‘s not saying much that he was a better choice than Mr. Huntington. Ah Helen, I wanted you to↕️

DebinHawaii …live your life as a wealthy singleton! ??‍♀️ All that aside, I think Anne Brontë wrote a compelling story & while I doubt I will ever reread it, it wasn‘t bad. (I don‘t hate it like Wuthering Heights or like it as much as Jane Eyre, my only other Brontë sister reads.) ?Thanks to @BarkingMadRun for hosting. Don‘t know if you have seen the “She‘s a 10 but…” trend on Twitter where someone is a “10” BUT there‘s a weird quality that might lower their rating,

For book tour review, I‘m not quite finished with this one as I am savoring it by reading about a few countries a day, but I already know it‘s a pick. Big, beautiful travelogue by the first documented woman to travel to all 195 UN-recognized countries. Here she focuses on 100 countries that make her heart “smile.” An interesting perspective, Jessica was born in Detroit to Ugandan parents so she feels that ⬇️

DebinHawaii …her “Blackness combined with her Africanness” give her a different perspective than the white men who are mostly frequently documented as visiting all the world‘s countries. Sad but not surprising to note some of her scariest travel stories happened in the U.S. due to her race. But this book is really a celebration of the world & a beautiful one at that! (I am obsessed with the photo of her beautiful Ugandan grandmother on the collage. 💕) (edited) 2w

Joining in the #SummerHeat fun. So most of the year feels like summer in Hawaii, but it does get warmer & more humid in the summer months & sometimes that makes me feel like the “melting” woman figure on the left (from a store at the old Waialua Sugar Factory). So for me, Hawaii summers are about cold food & drinks: shave ice, Dole Whip, iced coffee, Acai bowls, reading on the beach with your feet in the sand, sunsets, palm trees & hanging out ⬇️

DebinHawaii …around the island with visiting friends & family & maybe seeing the rare corpse flower blooming at the botanical garden if you‘re lucky. I threw my favorite throwback family summer vacation photo in there too from the Oregon Coast (I‘m the one being held like a sack of potatoes by my mom) when summer meant station wagon road trips. ☀️🌈🌊🧋🍹 2w

I utterly failed at reading this a #chapteraday with the #PemberLittens with a crazy work month, it was hard to find time to read it at night & stay awake as interesting as I found it.
