The Mechanical
The Mechanical | Ian Tregillis
My name is Jax. That is the name granted to me by my human masters. I am a slave. But I shall be free. Set in a world that might have been, of mechanical men and alchemical dreams, the new novel from Ian Tregillis confirms his place as one of the most original new voices in speculative fiction. PRAISE FOR IAN TREGILLIS "A major new talent." George R.R. Martin "Tremendous." Cory Doctorow "Addictively brilliant." io9 "Exciting and intense." Publishers Weekly "Eloquent and utterly compelling." Had a really hard time getting into and finishing this one. Finally got hooked towards the end, but contemplating if I‘ll bother with the rest of the series. It‘s been almost a month since completing and still no burning desire to see what happens (I actually forgot I even read it), so it doubtful.

Intriguing scifi book. Well written and fascinating concept. Will definitely read the rest of the trilogy.

Somewhere between a pick and so so. I think that I need to give up on fantasy for a while. It's not that this book is bad. It takes a concept that alchemy works to create clockwork automatons which allows the Dutch to take over the world, with the exception of France which is holding out in Canada. An investigation into free will and through the eyes of a variety of characters including a servitor who has been freed from its geas's. My issue is

Oblomov26 Again with the world building. No explanation is provides as to how the clockwork alchemy works and the rest of the world seems not well thought out, what happened to India and China? Why have the French developed things like steam power and electricity but dismiss them as curiosities? A pick for the philosophical investigation. 8y

Sitting at my desk on a Monday with a second coffee trying to concentrate, while I know I would rather be at home reading. Have only started the Mechanical but it good so far and also a nice design.

So good. I'm not always a fan of sci fi but this was engrossing and a fascinating look at free will. Can't wait to read the next one!

Cannot put this bad boy down. One of the most fascinating insights into free will and the toll it can take. "Freedom felt like… nothing. Free Will was a vacuum, a negative space. It was the absence of coercion, the absence of compulsion, the absence of agony."

I could barely but this book down to go to work, and I'm slightly in love with a Jax the rebel robot.
