5 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
'Then she began to run, and she ran over the sharp stones and through the thorns, and the wild animals bounded past her ...' Four weird, dark and enchanting fairy-tales from the Brothers Grimm. Introducing Little Black Classics: 80 books for Penguin's 80th birthday. Little Black Classics celebrate the huge range and diversity of Penguin Classics, with books from around the world and across many centuries. They take us from a balloon ride over Victorian London to a garden of blossom in Japan, from Tierra del Fuego to 16th-century California and the Russian steppe. Here are stories lyrical and savage; poems epic and intimate; essays satirical and inspirational; and ideas that have shaped the lives of millions. Jacob Ludwig Karl (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Karl (1786-1859) are the Brothers Grimm. Their Selected Tales are also available in Penguin Classics.

Years ago I read Philip Pullman's Fairy Tales From the Brothers Grimm. The gallows humor, breakneck narrative pacing, absurd situations always stuck with me. This little black classic, containing 7 selections, was a nice refresher. The range of the stories: from the outright horror of the title tale to the absurdity of The Six Servants to the heartwarming story of animals who are slated to be killed who unite in Bremen Town Band.

vivastory Selections are from this translation, also pub by Penguin 1y

A collection of short stories from the Brothers Grimm. It's weird reading these now as they are so well known as children's stories, but obviously presented here with an older and more grizzly take. I didn't mind this, a quick read that was filled with twisted nostalgia.

Dark and violent fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm. These aren't the Disney versions. Some lesser known selections, minus the ubiquitous Snow White. Illustration by Trina Schart Hyman.

Brie @vivastory Yes, I read it last summer and really enjoyed it. I love fairy tales and Philip Pullman, so it was a perfect pairing. 7y
