Pickpick

My favourite Morse book to date; given that it was the first one to win the British Crime Writers‘ Gold Dagger award, I was obviously not alone in this opinion! While convalescing in hospital, Morse is intrigued by a booklet about a murder 130 years previously, and finds inconsistencies that lead him to believe the wrong people were convicted, and he sets out to find the truth.

TheEllieMo I do feel, though, that the book owes a huge debt to Josephine Tey‘s The Daughter of Time, published some 38 years prior to The Wench is Dead, which also used the concept of a detective reviewing an historical crime from their hospital bed. (edited) 5y
TheEllieMo And I do wish Morse wasn‘t such a lech!! At least he seems to be getting less interested in porn. It will be interesting seeing how his character progresses, and by the time The Wench is Dead was published, there had been 3 series of Morse on TV. I‘m interested to see if TV Morse had an influence on Book Morse 5y

Oh this has annoyed me!! Two near-identical quotes from books 6 and 8 in the Inspector Morse series. Couldn‘t Dexter have been just a little more imaginative!!

rretzler I‘m slowly reading the series and I would never have caught that! I‘m surprised that Dexter would have done that 5y

The Wench is Dead | Colin Dexter

The hash tag #wenches made me think of this book by the late Colin Dexter. I love the Inspector Morse Series and was brought up on the Morse TV series - John Thaw was a great actor.

CrowCAH Perfect! I ❤️ the Inspector Morse series too, only have seen the TV series, never read any of the books. 8y
Andrew65 @CrowCAH Certain aspects of the Morse character are different in the book, but they are good reads. Interestingly Colin Dexter left a codicil in his will that no one else is allowed to play Morse so as not to spoil the image and work of John Thaw playing Morse. http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/the-morse-code-no-other-... CrowCAH @Andrew65 interesting article; thanks for sharing! 7y
