Futurological Congress: From the Memoirs of Ijon Tichy (Harvest/HBJ)
Futurological Congress: From the Memoirs of Ijon Tichy (Harvest/HBJ) | Stanislaw Lem
4 posts | 12 read | 2 to read
Bringing his twin gifts of scientific speculation and scathing satire to bear on that hapless planet, Earth, Lem sends his unlucky cosmonaut, Ijon Tichy, to the Eighth Futurological Congress. Caught up in local revolution, Tichy is shot and so critically wounded that he is flashfrozen to await a future cure. Translated by Michael Kandel.

On a roll, I've been reading a book a day. Lem is hit or miss for me, I either love his books or am indifferent. We'll see which way this one goes.

IftyZaidi This was adapted into a movie with Robin Wright a few years ago. I haven't watched it though. 5y
SpaceCowboyBooks @IftyZaidi I'm only 50 pages in but it's so all over the place that it seems like it wouldn't translate to film 5y

I don‘t normally reread books, but this one with its crazy premise has been on my mind a lot recently. The chatty, playful bits haven‘t aged all that well, but the overall build-up remains great.

Terrific and funny and prophetic book. Like Philip K. Dick writing in the style of Woody Allen‘s short pieces. The bit about computers shirking their programming seems to be coming true. #sf #1970s #futurology #lem

Took a break from reading to watch this movie which, as it turns out, is based on a novella by Stanislaw Lem. Very loosely based, I'd say. The movie is animation bookended by live action and stars the impeccable Robin Wright.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Watching this is the closest I will get to taking psychotropic drugs. 7y
BookHermit Watching this was trippier than psychotropic drugs 🤣🤡😬 7y
