The Monkey's Paw | W. W. Jacobs
post image

Me, introducing “The Monkey‘s Paw”: This is one of those classic stories that everyone has heard of.

At least one student in every single period: I‘ve never heard of it.

Me, by 4th period, twitching: Yes, but you‘re hearing about it now. That is what is currently happening. At this very moment, you are transitioning from the group labeled “People who have not heard of ‘The Monkey‘s Paw‘” to the vast legions, the uncountable millions, that have!

Jerdencon In 8th grade we acted this out for a school assembly! I remember it clear as day and 8th grade was a long time ago! Lol 2w
Daisey I always enjoyed reading this with my students and seeing their final reactions. 2w
Billypar Confession: I've heard of it, but mainly because of references from a Simpson's Halloween episode, which I'm assuming it inspired 😶 From Season 3, so that's too old for your students (do they even watch present-day Simpson's?) 2w

saresmoore Question for you! My kiddos are part of an age-mixed, self-directed school and I‘m seeking out great book club books that would appeal to approx. ages 8-12. Any immediate suggestions? Even within that age range, we have a wide scope of reading abilities. 1w
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @saresmoore Yes! Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli (I never got tired of teaching this one), Ungifted by Gordon Korman, Savvy by Ingrid Law, Princess Academy by Shannon Hale, Blood on the River: Jamestown 1607 by Elisa Carbone (GREAT historical fiction), Smile by Raina Telgemeier (this one‘s a comic!), Coraline by Neil Gaiman, Kenny and the Dragon by Tony DiTerlizzi (shorter with great illustrations)... 1w
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @saresmoore How to Steal a Dog by Barbara O‘Conner and Blue by Joyce Hostetter (saddest book EVER) are both North Carolina based and the authors come to a lot of schools to do presentations, plus you can‘t go wrong with classics like Hatchet, The Indian in the Cupboard, and The Westing Game 1w

The film Blade Runner takes place in the far distant future of “November 2019” so my plan this month is to read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner, and Blade Runner 2: The Edge of Human.

I‘ll also be watching the Workprint, the Domestic Cut, the International Cut, the Director‘s Cut, the Final Cut, Dangerous Days: The Making of Blade Runner, and Blade Runner 2049.

Because when I geek, I geek hard.

“I was not a murderer: I had merely plucked the fruit of death before it fell to the ground.”

Yes, there‘s an eloquent creature made of corpses killing people in the Bataween neighborhood of Baghdad, but, this novel suggests, is that really more horrible than life in a city where a walk to the store could end with you dead from an explosion or random gunfire?

A large cast of characters paints a brutal, thoughtful portrait of modern Iraq.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Thanks for checking on me @vivastory I‘m still around, it‘s just that trying to keep my head above water in my surprise new teaching position is consuming a diabolical amount of time. Book 1 was a near perfect con-artists-plan-a-heist-to-save-the-world thrill ride.

Book 2 was a slow moving city-under-siege tale.

Book 3 was... jeez, it was a lot. Lots of discussions about benevolent authoritarianism and the forces of two warring gods (who maybe should have been introduced in this trilogy before now) battling it out while the world comes to an end.

I have no issues with the ending though. It was extreme, but fitting.

DGRachel I loved book one, but I bailed on book two. I‘ll get back to it eventually, because the series was recommended by a friend so I feel obligated. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w

Even though it was the standard Gene Wolfian nigh-impenetrable mystery box, I felt a bit more prepared for the narrative shenanigans of In Green‘s Jungles than I was with On Blue‘s Waters.

Have Horn and Silk merged personalities which was alluded to in the previous book? Decidedly yes. How? Eh, says Wolfe, it‘s really not that important.

While his plots are obscure, Wolfe always writes about spiritual matters with brilliant clarity.

Just as Severian investigated & evaluated his relationships with the Increate and the Conciliator (roughly God & Jesus) in the Book of the New Sun, Patera Silk casts off the false gods of Mainframe to follow the one true God, the Outsider, in the Book of the Long Sun.

Horn, his protégé, continues that relationship here in the Book of the Short Sun.

Horn (in-universe author of the previous 4 books) set out to find Silk (who the 4 books were about). Silk and Horn merge minds in a vague way.

Now he‘s Incanto (or Rajan in the previous book) & is writing about things that are happening to him as well as what happened to him in the past while sometimes skipping ahead to mention things he will be telling us about later.

I am well aware that my current headspace might not be conducive to a super-dense science fantasy with multiple layers of unreliable narrators and text that will need to be continually reread to unlock its mysteries... but that‘s just how Gene Wolfe rolls and I‘m still aiming to finish his 12-book Solar Cycle this year.

This will be the first of his books that I‘ve read since his passing...

Book hangover is REAL, folks. I don‘t read many romances, and after just finishing a book* with lush prose and passion so hot the pages singed my fingers, Miranda in Milan, a sequel to Shakespeare‘s The Tempest, just couldn‘t compare.

The insta-love between Miranda and her magical maid, the flat prose, and - oof - a solid almost 50-page block of exposition near the end, were balanced somewhat by some truly lovely sentiments about Caliban.

First of all, the title is a cheap trick. The War Doctor has a very brief cameo, but this is 10, 11, and 12‘s adventure.

The plot itself is a little much, but oh man does Who veteran Paul Cornell nail the dialogue and the dynamic of these three Doctors. 12 gets all the best lines, calling 10 and 11 “manic pixie dream Doctors” and “Posh Doctor and Baby Doctor” which makes 12 “Scary Doctor”.

Good fun for knowledgeable Whovians. Not for newbies.

TheSpineView Wow! Only July and already getting ready for the new school year! 4mo
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @TheSpineView Budget cuts mean my old position is now folded into someone else‘s job, so I found out 2 weeks ago that I‘ll be teaching 8th grade English. I‘ve been moving out of my old classrooms at 2 other schools and moving into this one. No fun during the summer! 4mo

TobeyTheScavengerMonk @TheSpineView To be fair to my county, they found everybody in my department new jobs by plugging us into spots opened up by retiring or moving teachers, so I can‘t complain. 4mo
TheSpineView @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Glad that you didn't have to job hunt... still no fun 4mo

The fact that I still made progress in Spiderlight through the big birthday weekend speaks to its awesomeness. My kiddos turned 5 and 2 (they are 3 years and 1 day apart) and much fun was had by all!
