Lion in the White House: A Life of Theodore Roosevelt | Aida Donald
3 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
New York State Assemblyman, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Governor of New York, Vice President and, at forty-two, the youngest President everin his own words, Theodore Roosevelt rose like a rocket. He was also a cowboy, a soldier, a historian, an intrepid explorer, and an unsurpassed environmentalist. In Lion in the White House, historian Aida Donald masterfully chronicles the life of this first modern president. TR's accomplishments in office were immense. As President, Roosevelt redesigned the office of Chief Executive and the workings of the Republican Party to meet the challenges of the new industrial economy. Believing that the emerging aristocracy of wealth represented a genuine threat to democracy, TR broke trusts to curb the rapacity of big business. He built the Panama Canal and engaged the country in world affairs, putting a temporary end to American isolationism. And he won the Nobel Peace Prizethe only sitting president ever so honored. Throughout his public career, TR fought valiantly to steer the GOP back to its noblest ideals as embodied by Abraham Lincoln. Alas, his hopes for his party were quashed by the GOP's strong rightward turn in the years after he left office. But his vision for America lives on. In lapidary prose, this concise biography recounts the courageous life of one of the greatest leaders our nation has ever known.

113/150 There is no American president I admire more than Teddy Roosevelt. He was a one of a kind original, a man of boundless energy and curiosity. I also know that he would never get elected today, especially by his beloved Republican party. He was a maverick, his own man, and the Republican party doesn't want that in 2022. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Kyndrill I‘m fascinated by TR too! I remember a history professor saying that he would never be elected now simply because he had a high squeaky voice and it‘s a good thing his was a pre-radio era. Anyway his energy and drive is very inspiring! 2y
wanderinglynn A fascinating person for sure. Stacked! 2y
MrsK I just put this one on my Christmas wishlist! Glad to hear it‘s worth it. TR was such an interesting individual. Have you read The Bully Pulpit or Mornings on Horseback? Both great reads if you‘re interested in TR. 2y
RamsFan1963 @MrsKinvestigates I have read The Bully Pulpit, and I thought it was excellent. Have you read Island of Vice? It deals with the time Roosevelt was the police commissioner of NYC. Very fascinating. 2y
MrsK @RamsFan1963 I have not. That was an interesting time in his career…may need to pick it up. Thanks! 2y

Changing things up a bit with this biography of Theodore Roosevelt. I've visited Sagamore Hill a few times and my kids love the Orchard House on the property, so I borrowed this book from my father in law to learn a bit more about one of our country's greatest presidents!
