#OffMyShelf for short stories; anthology, or essays

I‘m really wishing I had taken a Russian literature class in college. I absolutely loved this short story collection. An incredible writer, Chekhov definitely transcends time. I can see why he‘s considered one of the greatest short story writers.

So this book is off my TBR shelf, but I‘m definitely keeping it & will revisit these stories often.

#2025OffMyShelf

Ruthiella Nice work! I‘ve not read Chekov yet, but he‘s on my list. All the classics really, because they are the building blocks for what came after. 9h
wanderinglynn @Ruthiella I recommend Chekhov—he‘s very readable. 9h
Lesliereadsalot I took two Russian literature classes in college. Have never regretted reading War and Peace and The Brothers Karamazov among many others. The professor was blind and made these novels come alive. Best classes I took! 7h
ferskner Russian lit is so daunting before you start but then so addictive! 6h

I have many comfort reads—different ones for different comfort needs. The tagged is one (especially the audio version read by Steve West 🥰), along with their Kate Daniels series.

Other comfort reads include anything by Abby Jimenez, Kristen Callihan‘s VIP series, Dirty Secret by Mira Lyn Kelly, David Eddings‘s Belgariad & Mallorean series, Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, Pride & Prejudice, & HHGTTG

TheBookHippie Thanks so much for your linked blog post about what to read instead of_____. My son did read it, make a list and shared it with his fellow IB English peeps. ♥️ 1d

A fun article from Atlas Obscura

“The writer Rabelais invented fake book titles that were bawdy send-ups of the French establishment in the early 16th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries, servants‘ passages in wealthy households were often hidden by “jib doors,” bookshelves built directly into walls, and some of the more humorous-minded would put fake titles on the fake books.“

I‘ve been so motivated with my #2025OffMyShelf challenge, I created a part 2!

These prompts are a bit broader to allow for a variety of interpretations.

I‘ve also put the Part 2 Reading Challenge on Story Graph. The links for SG as well as a jpg or pdf version of the bingo board are on my blog: http://wanderinglynn.com/2025/01/23/2025-off-my-shelf-reading-challenge-part-2/

“But people have grown better,” observed the bailiff.
“In what way?”
“Cleverer.”
“Cleverer, maybe, that‘s true, young man; but what‘s the use of that? What earthly good is cleverness to people on the brink of ruin? One can perish without cleverness. What‘s the good of cleverness to a huntsman if there is no game?”

From The Pipe. Written in 1887. Still relevant (or even more so) in 2025.

Book 2 in the love letters series (and there seems to be just the 2 books). Nathan might have edged out Maddox for book boyfriend. This is a beautiful story of childhood friends meeting as adults and finding love.

But, this book has dark underlying themes, including child abuse (verbal & physical), parental death, negative self-talk and suicidal thoughts—there is a content warning at the beginning of the book. So not a story for everyone.

I love a good second chance romance and Maddox & Hannah's story did not disappoint, even though 15 years is a long time. But they also got to know each other again as adults, which was lovely. Yes, the miscommunication went on a bit, but then they did have a grown up conversation, which I think showed the transition from hurt college students to adults.

Bonus, this story is performed by two amazing narrators, Andi Arndt & Jacob Morgan.

A book that‘s been on my shelf for over 5 years is now #OffMyShelf 🎉

While I thought the pacing was inconsistent between the various time periods, I did enjoy this story. And now I want to go to Provence. 🇫🇷

marleed It‘s such bonus when a book languishing on my own shelves is a pick. I save my 5*: A+ and 4.75*: solid A reads. So if the book is really good, it‘s a dang, but I didn‘t clear my shelf situation! 6d

The Rom-Commers: A Novel | Katherine Center

Mehso-so

Major mixed feelings, which I explain (or maybe rant) in my review on SG. But basically while I started out not liking Charlie & feeling sympathy for Emma, by the end, I was all team Charlie but thought Emma was too self-centered.

And even though I knew, KNEW where Center was taking the Charlie storyline, it was still emotional whiplash.

So this might be a soft pick for me but major mixed feelings.

Magpiegem @Elizabeth2 @wanderinglynn what is the difference between following and friends on SG they seem like the same thing, I can‘t work it out! 1w
Elizabeth2 @Magpiegem I really don‘t know. I listened to a podcast with the developer of SG. They are still working out kinks with being able to communicate with friends/followers, so it‘s possible that there‘s no difference now, but future capabilities there. They have to figure out moderation of comments and blocking before they can allow users to message each other. 7d
Magpiegem @Elizabeth2 thank you that‘s really interesting, I guess I don‘t mind it not having comments etc- that‘s what Litsy is for! But I do love being able to keep track of my stats and challenges! 7d
Elizabeth2 @Magpiegem same! I don‘t see SG (or Goodreads) as social apps really. More just for me to track my reading. But I do like seeing what friends/followers are reading, if they have read the books I have, and their reviews. 7d
wanderinglynn @Elizabeth2 @Magpiegem from what I read, you can follow someone to see what they‘re reading but they don‘t know that you‘re following (they don‘t see that) vice friend request where the person sees the request & has to accept it. And it depends on how your preferences & privacy settings are set because you can make your profile private by setting friends preference to nobody. Or set your privacy settings to no one. 7d

“And sin . . . is when you treat people like things.”

BethM I‘ve never seen this quote. It‘s spot on. 2w
BethM I‘ve never read Pratchett is this something that can be read without starting at the beginning ? 2w
julesG @BethM Yes and Yes. The quote is very apt and I was thinking of it earlier (my version is just "grey" instead of "gray" ?). You can read the Discworld books in any order, except for the Tiffany Aching sub-series, but Carpe Jugulum is not part of that subseries 2w

After reading the Vulture article that came out yesterday on an author who was one of my top faves, I‘ve been scrolling social media reading others‘ thoughts.

Then I wrote down my own thoughts along with a list of fave fantasy/scifi authors/books: http://wanderinglynn.com/2025/01/14/processing-difficult-thoughts-or-in-the-alte...

Too many thoughts. Which is why I have the photo of Jasper.

BkClubCare Thank you for sharing this. I will look into the authors you mention and appreciate the reminder to get the second book after Wild-Built 2w
wanderinglynn @BkClubCare you‘re welcome. ☺️ And if you have any recommendations, please feel feee to share them. 2w
TheBookHippie Chloe Gong really does good fantasy -the Shakespeare background is what got me as I don‘t read this genre, however the word building and world building is brilliant. It‘s very different and not like anything I‘ve read before. I too don‘t know what to do with the info, my son loves his writing and will be crushed- too busy to see news currently. It‘s just so exhausting.. 2w

AmyG Well written. It‘s so disappointing when an artist whose work you love turns out to be…not a very good person. I have had this happen with favorite musicians . Oh man. 😞 (edited) 2w
wordslinger42 I haven‘t read his work yet, but Tad Williams is a new-to-me fantasy author whose books I‘m looking forward to giving a try this year. 2w
wanderinglynn @TheBookHippie Gong‘s These Violent Delights is on my list for this year! 2w
wanderinglynn @AmyG so disappointing. And then we get into the art vs the artist dispute. But when the artist is still alive & profiting off of said art, I really struggle with that. 2w
wanderinglynn @wordslinger42 thanks! I have not read any of his work, so I‘ll have to give him a try. And let me know what you think of his work after you read one. 😀 2w
TheBookHippie @wanderinglynn I struggle with that as well. Some classic lit authors are yikes! And I adore Hemingway‘s writing…@AmyG I have that with music as well. 2w
wordslinger42 @wanderinglynn Will do! 😄 2w
ShelleyBooksie It sounds like I missed something interesting 2w
Mollyanna Thanks for sharing this list. I have about 70 pages left in my first Ilona Andrews book and am really enjoying it. 2w
AmyG @wanderinglynn @TheBookHippie I have trouble hearing or reading their work as the toughts of what they did remain in my head. It‘s all changed for me. 2w
Leftcoastzen Nice posting! I am maybe more disappointed than usual. I haven‘t read everything he‘s read or anything, shows we never know … 2w
AllDebooks That is such a spot-on response. I've felt quite despondent as he was in my top 10 male authors. I agree with everything you said. Thank you for the alternatives. I really need to get to Becky Chambers. 2w
AllDebooks I would highly recommend Samantha,Shannon's The Bone Season series, or her other fantasy series, starting with 2w
shortsarahrose I‘m currently reading Song of the Huntress by Lucy Holland and enjoying it so far, but I really enjoyed her first book Sistersong. She writes characters with a lot of depth, and I enjoy how she reinterprets Medieval English folk tales with a queer/feminist fantasy twist. 2w
DogMomIrene I‘ll be reading your thoughts tomorrow. Getting late here for heavy reading. But I saw some coverage and reader reactions, and all I kept thinking was how happy I am that I‘ve never really read him. I think I read a short story or novella, but I never committed to loving his work. Not sure that makes processing the reporting easier but I‘m not torn up about book attachments. 2w
BethM That‘s a great take. His writing has never resonated with me, but SFF is my first love and I‘ve always admired what he‘s done for the genre. I‘m like you and have spent far too much time reading reactions. I think mostly bc I‘m not surprised. Because I want to be a person where reading that is horrifying. Instead I recognize it as terrible but have seen/heard/worked with far worse. But that‘s also why I believe it. Too many unrelated victims with 2w
BethM Too many of the same pattern threads. I‘ve seen that over and over again in the criminal justice world. Today I read a great/not great post about how Tanith Lee was basically plagiarized in large parts by him, and never even given credit as an author who inspired him. Perhaps she‘s worth adding to the list. 2w
dabbe 🖤🐾🖤 2w
julesG @BethM read the vulture article after you (?) posted it yesterday. I agree, too many same patterns from unrelated people to not be true. I'm disappointed, he was supposed to be one of the good ones. 2w
SconsinBookyBadger Thank you for sharing. So many new to me authors to discover one of these days. Douglas Adams and HG Wells were the only recognizable names. John Scalzi‘s Starter Villain is sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be read. I‘m bookmarking your blog entry to refer back to everyone else. 2w
CarolynM I saw Terry Pratchett speak many years ago, not long after Good Omens came out. Someone asked him about the writing of that book. He didn‘t say much, but his tone and his body language indicated he hadn‘t enjoyed the experience. As a result, I‘ve always suspected the writer in question was not the person he wanted us to believe he was. @julesG 2w
julesG @CarolynM oh, wow. Now I need to go back to the biography and read between the lines. I'm not saying I got the impression that the two were fast friends, but I thought they got on well. 🤔🤔🤔 2w
wanderinglynn @ShelleyBooksie there was a rather damning article in Vulture about Neil Gaiman & sexual assault allegations. 2w
wanderinglynn @Mollyanna yay! I love Ilona Andrews‘s books 💜 2w
wanderinglynn @AmyG yes exactly that. 2w
wanderinglynn @Leftcoastzen thank you. I he was one of my faves, but now. . . It al feels so tainted. 2w
wanderinglynn @AllDebooks thank you. He was a top 5 fave for me. Now, well, I‘ve already started purging. And thanks for the recommendation! I‘ll add her to the list. 👍🏻 (edited) 2w
wanderinglynn @shortsarahrose thanks! I‘ll add her to the list! 👍🏻 2w
wanderinglynn @DogMomIrene yes, definitely mentally prepare if you read the article. My blog doesn‘t get that heavy. But the Vulture article is hard to read. Lots of trigger warnings. 2w
wanderinglynn @BethM I‘ve also been reading that apparently Terry Pratchett said that after their Good Omens collab, he would never work with Gaiman again. And apparently there were people in the industry who knew things but never spoke up. That just makes me mad. 2w
wanderinglynn @BethM and thanks for the recommendation! 👍🏻 I‘ll look her up. 2w
wanderinglynn @SconsinBookyBadger yay! I hope you find at least one you like. Scalzi‘s Starter Villain made me laugh out loud. 2w
wanderinglynn @CarolynM I‘ve seen posts from/by people who allegedly knew Pratchett who said he would never work with Gaiman again. And apparently GO is mostly Pratchett anyway. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Guess we‘ll never really know. 2w
wanderinglynn @julesG no, lots of people are coming out and saying that Pratchett did bot like him & refused to work with him again. Most of GO was written by correspondence, and apparently the majority of it was Pratchett. 2w
DogMomIrene @wanderinglynn Your blog addressed your struggle really well and I appreciated your list of go-to authors. We share a bunch of favorites. I saw comments on Reddit about article specifics, so I‘ve decided reading it is a pass for me. I‘ve got the picture. I will follow this story to see if he faces any consequences. Another book #OffMyShelf 🎉

I didn‘t know who she was before reading this. Sadly, I just didn‘t enjoy the writing. I thought the way she phrased things & her use of metaphors, well, the best way to describe it that it feels like you have to know her personally to get how she talks. I found chapters/stories to be disconnected.

Overall, this story was not my cup of tea, but others might find it meaningful and relatable.

Ruthiella Great progress! 👍 2w

After 2 DFNs, the tagged was my first completed book on Jan. 1. It‘s book 1 in the Walsh sibling series.

I‘d recommend this for readers who enjoy romances where both MCs have a bit of baggage & in the case of the MMC, an abusive childhood. That being said, there are several trigger warnings for this series, so it‘s not for everyone.

Prairiegirl_reading I finished All the Colors of the Dark. After seeing it on so many best of the year lists I was very disappointed and definitely would not recommend it personally. 2w
SilversReviews My first book of the year was FABULOUS - It is The Secret History of Audrey James by Heather Marshall. 2w

Not my cup of tea. While this was an original idea for a mystery novel, it was a bit of a slog to get through. Given that there's really no mystery (Tey was pretty upfront on finding Richard III not guilty), the book has no action. It's really an academic discussion about one king's history and reputation.

Another book #OffMyShelf 🎉 Plus, I‘m making excellent progress on my chunkster & have read at least 100 pages every day this month.

Ruthiella I loved this book! 😂 I felt like it was a sort of cerebral Rear Window. 2w
wanderinglynn @Ruthiella ah, it was kind of like that, except sadly without Jimmy Stewart. 2w
CarolynM You‘re right that nothing happens, yet, like @Ruthiella , I loved it. 2w

#OffMyShelf for published in the last 2 years prompt

I struggle to understand the hype. Maybe it‘s that I can't relate to Margo since she is 19yo single mom, college dropout. But the main issues are:
(1) I was bored. I skimmed a good portion & never lost the story because it never went anywhere. The synopsis is the *entire* story.
(2) with the title, I expected a more realistic book. But here, all the plot lines wrapped up too neatly positive.

wanderinglynn @tpixie I also couldn‘t relate, but moreover there were too many other issues with it. 2w

“You are about to begin reading a new book, and to be honest you are a little tense.”

#firstlinefriday

I‘m almost halfway. I have mixed feelings so far as I have some concerns with the messaging and the switching between 1st POV and 3rd (sometimes on the same page) feels gimmicky. So I‘ll probably rate it as meh, and I think it‘s been overhyped.

tpixie My older sister could not relate and so did not finish it… I‘ll be interested to see what you think of it 2w

#TLT 44/100

Not sure how the BBC came up with this list as it seems a bit random. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Some are too recent for my childhood. Some I didn‘t read until I was an adult.

Some faves: The Little Prince, Alice‘s Adventures in Wonderland, Charlotte‘s Web, Mary Poppins, The Snowy Day

Some faves not on the list: The Tale of Desperaux, Mrs. Frisby & the Rats of NIMH, Island of the Blue Dolphins, Julie and the Wolves, Ramona Quimby Age 8

Luke-XVX I was glad to see an Alan Garner title in there! 2w

Bailedbailed

For the 2nd chance prompt on the #OffMyShelf challenge.

I first started the tagged in Oct. The premise was intriguing & the beginning showed promise. However, as the story progressed, I lost interest & found that I was forcing myself to read, so I put it aside.

I came back to this book today & only got 2 chapters further than last time. I simply am not enjoying this. Too many things I disliked.

Now it‘s off my shelf & on my Pango shelf!

Aims42 I couldn‘t get into this one either, I bailed on it too. I think my expectations were too high ☹️ 3w

Pickpick

I learned of James Vukelich from his Ojibwe word of the day on IG where he teaches how we are all connected with everything around us. And in this book, he teaches that “aanik-” means “to be interconnected.

This is a beautiful work. Here, he attempts to explain Ojibwe teachings by translating those words & concepts into English—not an easy feat. Because, like many language translations, it's not an easy one-to-one construction.

The first chunkster for the #ChunksterChallenge2025 that I‘m tackling is Don Quixote. The paperback edition I‘m reading has 940 pages. I failed to read it last year, so I added it to my #2025OffMyShelf reading challenge. I started it today & read 103 pages.

If/when I finish this one, I plan to tackle the bitsy chunkster The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle next.

Thanks @Amiable for hosting!

1st book off my #OffMyShelf reading challenge. 🎉

This super short story—not quite 69 pgs double spaced with some illustrations—is barely a story. There's an interesting plot, there are interesting characters. But it needs to be fleshed out. No world building, no character development. The reader is just dropped into the middle of a tavern & given a few crumbs. A bare bones story, which feels more like an outline of a story. I‘m skipping book 2.

wanderinglynn This book was self-published and is not in the database. 3w
