I totally did not renew my kindle unlimited subscription so I could covertly read at work on my 3d screen. Nope, I would never do that.

In other news, I appreciate when an author (here, Leia Stone) lists a TW in the forward.

Don't be misled like I was. This is not really a Christmas book despite the title.

Jenny is a 20-something. My irritation with her stems mainly from the writing style because it involved lots of Jenny's inner thoughts that were mostly woe to me, even when she sees the struggles others are going through. I just wanted to yell at her, YOU ARE NOT ALONE JENNY. MOST OF US ARE BROKEN AND HAVE ISSUES. Her whole attitude was irritating. 👇🏻

wanderinglynn I would have DNF'd it but there was one minor plot point that I wanted to see if I had guessed right. I did. And now I wished I had DNF'd it. Meh. 2d
tracey38 Well, that's disappointing for a book with Christmas in the title! 1d
wanderinglynn @tracey38 yes it was! The author tried to make a point at the end that we should view life as Christmas every day, but it fell flat for me. 1d

I like a variety. According to my Spotify 2021 wrapup, I listened to 26,426 minutes comprised of 41 genres & 550 artists. I played my 2021 fave song 193 times. 😆

Team #BFC21 - Month 12 is HERE!

Dec can be a challenging month for many of us for many reasons. I encourage everyone to include a self-care goal.

And remember if you are feeling alone, lost, or just need someone to talk to, use the #HolidayHugs hashtag.

My Dec #BFC goals:
* walk 3 mi at least 21 days
* meditate & yoga 21 days
* write every day
* get at least 1 bingo on one of the reading challenges

See All 23 Comments
NovelGirl82 My biggest goal this month is to get my thesis written. I would like to workout at least 3-4 days/wk while doing so because I haven‘t been feeling very well since I haven‘t been. 1w
Bookwormjillk Thanks @wanderinglynn I found a body weight workout challenge somewhere in the winter games documents so my goal is to do that plus take a walk while listening to an audiobook or podcast every weekday in December. I also want to continue my practice of dedicated reading time on my work from home days. 1w
OriginalCyn620 I took November off from #BFC, but I‘m going to participate in December! I have to think about my goals and will post later! 1w

I hate to write this but I just didn't find this book quite as funny or engaging as her previous books. I applaud her for being open & honest about her struggles with mental illness & other health issues. But these essays didn't seem to flow as well & felt almost disjointed at times, which made me think that this book was more of a lift for her to finish.

But I still gave it a pick because she gives a voice to all of us who feel broken at times.

On the one hand, I did learn some things about Arnold. On the other, I don‘t think there was really enough for a stand alone book. I felt many scenes were unnecessarily expanded just to fill pages.

Also warning for sensitive readers (like me), some of the battle scenes have rather graphic descriptions.

I also learned that apparently “YA history” is now a genre. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Strange Practice | Vivian Shaw

Mehso-so

While the synopsis was intriguing, the execution fell flat for me. One of main aspects that drew me to this book was the fact that Greta is a physician for the underworld. Some of the scenes I liked best were when she cares for Varney, sees to the ghoullet, & discusses an upcoming foot-bone replacement surgery for a mummy. Those were the parts I wanted more of & yet her practice (despite the title) is not even a subplot.

👇🏻

wanderinglynn My other big disappointment was the antagonist. Dealing with that just didn't really fit for me within the set-up for this world. A slower build up over 3 or 4 books to this kind of antagonist would have worked better. But diving right into this kind of story before even really fleshing out the world made me lose interest. There are some other issues, but this is the biggest one. 3w

#wondrouswednesday

1. The evening sky earlier this week.

2. Nothing unusual has happened. But it was wonderful to finally get my hands on book 3 of the Hell‘s Library trilogy. Now if Rothfuss would just publish book 3 of the Kingkiller Chronicle, that‘s really be wonderful.

3. Great friends & cheerful co-workers

Eggs Gorgeous sky! Thanks for playing 🥰 3w

A quick guide (only 52 pages & lots of white space) that covers the basic plot points on how she thinks the pre-writing process will help you write a better book. No new information & the info just wasn‘t that great.

She uses one of her own books as an example but calls it one title in one chapter but another title in a different chapter, which makes me question the value of her advice. (And neither title is listed on her GR.)

Andrew65 Sounds strange. 3w
wanderinglynn @Andrew65 it was. It was suggested to me by a writer (but one who self-publishes). Not to dismiss the self-published world, but . . . this book felt like a self-published, self-promotional book. Definitely not worth the few bucks I paid for it. There are better books on writing. 3w

#two4tuesday

1. Yes, I hit my yearly GR reading goal at the end of August. 🎉

2. All of them! 😆 But really, I want to finish my October-December #bookspin & #doublespin picks

Thanks for the tag @TheRiehlDeal @TheSpineView

Have you played? @DGRachel @robinb @Ruthiella @kplovesbooks @SusanLee @Kenyazero @kspenmoll

TheSpineView August...wow! Impressive! Thanks for playing! 3w

Even though the synopsis sounded fun, the title made me hesitant. I should have gone with my first instinct as this book fell flat for me.

I think the main problem is this book wants to be like a Charley Davidson or Mercy Thompson (i.e., smart, funny, clever paranormal urban fantasy) but it fails. Plus I can‘t stand insta-loves and there‘s no real chemistry between Luke & Callie.

I will not be reading the next book.

Book 3 for #NovelNovember

Well my To Read shelf just got exponentially larger! 😆

Voting is now open for Round 1 of the 2021 GR Choice Awards.

This year, only 2 rounds (Final Round opens on 30 Nov) and no write-ins.

TheSpineView IKR! Do you want my copy of The Lincoln Highway? Looking to rehome and thought you might be interested. 3w
wanderinglynn @TheSpineView thanks but my TBR bookcase is already overflowing! 😂 My goals for Nov/Dec are to clear some of my shelves before getting new books. 💜 3w
TheSpineView @wanderinglynn I get that! Good luck on clearing your shelves! 📚📚📚 3w

I can‘t imagine a more perfect ending and I can‘t really put into words how much I love this imaginative, incredible trilogy.

1. Sadly not right now.

2. One that invites good discussion.

3. Debate because in my experience, when everyone agrees, the conversation quickly leaves books & goes to other topics.

ozma.of.oz That‘s a very good point on 3! Thank you for sharing! 3w

Pickpick

This is a pick because I do love the character and I‘m a huge fan of Darynda Jones.

That being said, there was a lot, almost too much, going on in this book. A couple of story lines were too quickly and neatly tied up. And unfortunately a lot of the mystery was predictable. But even so, I will pre-order the 3d book.

Book 1 for #NovelNovember
Plus I listened to another hour+ of The God of Lost Words and made it to over 33k for #NaNoWriMo 🎉

wanderinglynn @robinb not my favorite Darynda Jones book but I still love Sunshine. Here‘s hoping book 3 is a bit stronger🤞🏻 4w
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 4w
robinb @wanderinglynn I‘ve been a little undecided about this series so far…some parts good, sometimes not so much. I read the first Charley Davidson, and it wasn‘t for me. But I‘m interested enough to keep up with this one. 4w

wanderinglynn @robinb oh, and I loved her Charley Davidson series. But I get that it‘s not for everyone. I think in this book she was trying to get somethings resolved before book 3. I liked it just not as much as book 1. 3w
robinb @wanderinglynn That‘s funny because I liked this one better than the first. 😂😂 3w
wanderinglynn @robinb oh that‘s awesome! 🤣 That‘s the beauty of books. 3w

Day 1 of #NovelNovember was busy. I got my miles in before it rained, got my hair cut, made progress on the tagged (approx 30% done), read another couple chapters of Strange Practice + got 2 more bingos for #NaNoBingo21 🎉

And despite the fact that (1) my story has taken a life of its own, (2) my story is somewhat disjointed & chaotic, and (3) I‘ve already made notes on how I want to edit it, I did hit 30000 words today 🤷🏼‍♀️🤣

wanderinglynn @Chrissyreadit while I trust Pirate Ship, I‘m still leery. The postal system is a hot mess and there‘s been too many articles on shortages. So my goal is to get things mailed ASAP. 4w
