Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations
Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations | Charles Dickens
5 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
Two of the most beloved novels in all of English literature-together in one extraordinary volume. A TALE OF TWO CITIES After eighteen years as a political prisoner in the Bastille, the ageing Doctor Manette is finally released and reunited with his daughter in England. There the lives of the two very different men, Charles Darnay, an exiled French aristocrat, and Sydney Carton, a disreputable but brilliant English lawyer, become enmeshed through their love for Lucie Manette. From the tranquil roads of London, they are drawn against their will to the vengeful, bloodstained streets of Paris at the height of the Reign of Terror, and they soon fall under the lethal shadow of the guillotine. GREAT EXPECTATIONS A terrifying encounter with an escaped convict in a graveyard on the wild Kent marshes; a summons to meet the bitter, decaying Miss Havisham and her beautiful, cold-hearted ward Estella; the sudden generosity of a mysterious benefactor- these form a series of events that changes the orphaned Pip's life forever, and he eagerly abandons his humble origins to begin a new life as a gentleman. Dickens's haunting late novel depicts Pip's education and development through adversity as he discovers the true nature of his "great expectations." This deluxe paperback edition features *French flaps *rough-cut high-quality paper *complimentary front- and back-cover designs highlighting each novel and including foil and debossing

Everything about this edition screams "Classics Deluxe", but I guess that O stamp takes priority.

twohectobooks I dunno, I also don‘t love how Great Expectations is relegated to small print. 5y
AMVP @twohectobooks it's actually pretty cool; the formatting is reversed on the back cover, so GE gets the big font treatment there. 5y
twohectobooks @AMVP ooh, that IS very cool. Back to hating the O logo lol 5y

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was the best of all possible Oprah book editions, it was the book whose ending made me weep publicly more than any other...

O, my dearest Love! Remember how strong we are in our happiness, and how weak he is in his misery!" ~
?️ Sprinted to the finish line in the latter half of this well known classic with quotable opening lines. I'll admit the beginning was a little slow for me, but when things picked up it was full speed ahead as the layers of the story begin to unfold.

Time for true confessions here... Besides A Christmas Carol (which I don't love), I have never read any Charles Dickens. I've tried twice to read Tale of Two Cities and bailed both times. I just cannot make myself read Dickens. His books are so crazy long, and I just haven't liked them enough to keep going. I'm feeling like I just need to make myself give him another try this year. Any suggestions from Dickens fans as to which one to try?

BarbaraJean Oliver Twist might be a good place to start, due to length! I feel like it's a good representation of what I love about Dickens--a bit of mystery, a lot of melodrama, and some great, fun, exaggerated characters. My favorite Dickens is David Copperfield (but it's one of the crazy long ones). I love its humor and it has some of my favorite Dickens characters. 7y
KVanRead Well of course you know I had to respond to this one!! I'm still working my way through, but so far my favorite is Great Expectations. Im currently reading Oliver Twist though and it is shorter and quite gripping IMO. My other tip would be to consider audio. Hugh Laurie did a fabulous Great Expectations. Or try SerialReader, i find the daily bite size chunks really keep me going. 7y

KVanRead @BarbaraJean I'm reading Oliver Twist right now and loving it. Well said! Who's your favorite in Copperfield? I love Betsy Trotwood.😊 7y
HeatherBookNerd @jenniferw88 @BarbaraJean thanks for your suggestions. @KVanRead I am keeping a classic going on @SerialReader all the time and I was thinking that it might be a good idea to read that way. But I do love audiobooks and Hugh Laurie, so that may be a good route! 7y
BarbaraJean @KVanRead Ohhhh, Aunt Betsy may just be my favorite!! "Donkeys!!!" 7y
Anna40 David Copperfield! 7y

It took me ages to think of this answer to the challenge #opposites for #riotgrams. I blame the heat.
