Southern Girl Meets Vegetarian Boy
Southern Girl Meets Vegetarian Boy: A Cookbook for Everyone at the Table | Damaris Phillips
2 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
Damaris Phillips is a southern chef in love with an ethical vegetarian. Growing up, greens were made with pork, and it wasn't Sunday without fried chicken. So she had to transform the way she cooks. In Southern Girl Meets Vegetarian Boy, Phillips shares 100 recipes that embody the modern Southern kitchen: food that retains all its historic comfort and flavor, but can now be enjoyed by vegetarians and meat-lovers alike. The book features Phillips's most cherished entrees from her childhood made both with and without meat: Chicken Fried Steak becomes Chicken Fried Seitan Steak. Loaded Potato and Bacon Soup is now Loaded Potato and Facon Soup. She gives down-home side dishes a makeover by removing meat, adding interna?tional spices, and updating cooking techniques, and offers soul-satisfying, irresistible desserts that triumph over the meat-eater-versus-vegetarian divide, every time. Phillips found a way to make Southern food that everyone can enjoy, wherever they are on their culinary journey.

ReadingEnvy @HardcoverHearts it's pretty good, although she overuses coconut oil for my tastes and I tried a cake recipe that wasn't great. But 7y

ReadingEnvy She looks a lot at the southern dishes and what is appealing about them and sounds a lot of energy recreating mouth feel and layering flavor. There is one section that has the veg and meat recipe for certain dishes, and I wonder if this is smart or wasted pages... would it be the same audience? 7y
ReadingEnvy @HardcoverHearts @Bianca sorry I didn't tag you both in each response! I also really appreciate that if the veg recipe has dairy and eggs, she provides info on how to make it completely plant based. 7y
ReadingEnvy @bianca @HardcoverHearts so vegan friendly too, a rarity for some vegetarian cookbooks! 7y
HardcoverHearts @ReadingEnvy I can tell already that I will be borrowing this from the library and probably saving my money. Thank you!!! 7y
ReadingEnvy Tonight I made spicy buffalo deviled eggs (well there prob isn't a vegan version of that haha) and Benedictine and tempeh bacon sandwiches... Apparently Benedictine sandwiches are super trad southern tea sandwiches and dang if this version isn't probably more tasty and more interesting than the classic. @HardcoverHearts @bianca 7y

Pickpick

This vegetarian cookbook has a number of good recipes, including Cajun beans & rice (our dinner tonight). Many recipes use meat substitutes, especially soy products, to re-create traditional meat & fish dishes—so be warned, if that‘s not your thing. Thanks to #AbramsDinnerParty & Abrams Books for the cookbook. I rate this above average, so it gets a pick. #LittensWhoCook

Beckys_Books I love her cooking show! 7y

ReadingEnvy I want to make a main dish from this because I also married a vegetarian. But the sweet potato bundt may also need to make an appearance! 7y
BethFishReads @ReadingEnvy lots of vegetarians in our family, but few are fans of soy products. The pimiento cheese will be made soon. And YES post dinner party here too 7y
