What to Think About Machines That Think
What to Think About Machines That Think: Today's Leading Thinkers on the Age of Machine Intelligence | Mr. John Brockman
4 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
Weighing in from the cutting-edge frontiers of science, today’s most forward-thinking minds explore the rise of “machines that think.” Stephen Hawking recently made headlines by noting, “The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” Others, conversely, have trumpeted a new age of “superintelligence” in which smart devices will exponentially extend human capacities. No longer just a matter of science-fiction fantasy (2001, Blade Runner, The Terminator, Her, etc.), it is time to seriously consider the reality of intelligent technology, many forms of which are already being integrated into our daily lives. In that spirit, John Brockman, publisher of Edge. org (“the world’s smartest website” – The Guardian), asked the world’s most influential scientists, philosophers, and artists one of today’s most consequential questions: What do you think about machines that think?

Pickpick

It's a pop-AI coffee table book, a collection of responses to the question, "What do you think about machines that think?" Responses come from 200ish scientists, artists, CEOs, futurists, and others. Each is short, 1 to 4 pages, and range from "Machines don't think" to "They already do"; from "Don't worry" to "Worry" to "Worry, but not for the reasons you think." Lots to chew on, but best consumed in small servings

TheAromaofBooks Sounds interesting! I think I currently fall into the “worry“ category! 😂 4y
swynn @TheAromaofBooks I did too, and still do, but reading this shifted me towards "Worry, but not for the reasons you think." 4y
TheAromaofBooks haha not exactly comforting, but I may have to pick this one up nonetheless!! 4y

"Experts say we don't understand intelligence well enough to build it, and I agree; but a set of forty-six chromosomes doesn't understand it, either, and nevertheless directs the formation of the necessary self programming wetware."

I find few thoughts quite as simultaneously exciting and disturbing.

#BookSpin and #DoubleSpin books for September: a collection of essays about machine intelligence; and a rock memoir of a musician with severe anxiety. Both have been TBR'd for a long time so I'm looking forward to checking them off. Thanks @TheAromaofBooks!
