“She imagined she would become an architect who created buildings with art, science and math.”
“She imagined she would become an architect who created buildings with art, science and math.”
It introduces students to Maya Lin's innovative thinking and resilience. In the classroom, I‘d use this book to encourage students to think about how they can express big ideas through art, perhaps even leading a project where they design their own memorials for causes important to them. It‘s perfect for integrating art, history, and character education.
In the biography about Maya Lin and how she designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial by Jeanne Walker Harvey, the story is about Maya Lin as a child and her creative personality growing up. Known for her minimalist and thoughtful approach, her work emphasizes harmony with nature, simplicity, and the power of memory, using light and lines to create spaces that invite reflection and emotional connection
“And with paper and scraps, she built tiny towns.“
Reading this to my 5th grade classroom, especially being in Maya Lin's home town, they were so fascinated and made many connections. Reading biographies of people from where your close to is so special for students.
This is an amazing book about the story of Maya Lin and how she worked hard to accomplish her dreams. Incredible story of how she came to designing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Children will love hearing this bold story.
“Maya was young, but she was brave. She didn‘t back down.”
I would use this biography to tell the story of Maya Lin to older elementary students. This book may inspire and connect students with their own artistic abilities and dreams. It would also be an opportunity to expose them to the design history of the famous Vietnam veterans memorial in Washington DC.

“The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was the first of Maya''s many works of art and architecture-memorials, sculptures, structures and spaces, inside and out.“
This biography picture book would make a great read-aloud when talking about the Vietnam war and how we now have a memorial to honor all who lost their life. On some of the pages, there are little fun facts about Maya that would keep the readers engaged.
This biography is about a girl named Maya Lin whose family had left China in order to live the American Dream. Both of her parents were artists of sorts and Maya knew she too wanted to create something. In college, she entered a contest to create the Vietnam Memorial and she won. The author is someone who knew Maya personally from college so she was able to include firsthand experiences that Maya encountered while making the plans.
#FlyHighJuly Day 23: When she won the competition for a monument commemorating the soldiers who fought in the Vietnam war, I was #amused to see how shocked the judges were that she was so young and still in school. Naturally, the pool of judges, at least as shown in the illustration, consisted mainly of male professionals, predictably. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-kw2
It was really interesting how Maya was only 21 when she designed the memorial.
“She wrote that her long, polished wall would be a quiet place to remember all those who died during the war. A place to be experienced by walking down then up past names that seemed to go on forever.”
Maya Lin: Artist-Architect of Light and Lines is the story of an amazing artist. She designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The illustrations in the story were also beautiful, and flowed well. It sparks inspiration and intrigued me to look into Maya and the memorial more.
I love this picture because she is working on architecture with her cat.
And after naming a piece- the final step in shaping her artwork- Maya Lin, the artist-architect, is ready to dream, think again, and create something new.
Love this book!! Great illustrations and a good story. I loved being able to see how she won the contest even though she was young. It is inspirational to see what amazing things people can do!
I loved these illustrations! They were simple yet beautiful and easy to look at.
This book tells you about Maya Lin and how she loved to study the spaces around her. She explored everything and anything and used her house as a model to build tiny towns out of paper and scraps. Maya grew up with art and learned to think with her hands as well as her mind. This book tells the story of an inspiring American artist, the architect who designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
“...is ready to dream, think and create again:“

I thought this biography was so interesting. It told the story of how 21 yo Maya Lin designed the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington D.C. I liked that it showed that you can accomplish your goals even at a young age, which is a great lesson for young children to learn.
Nice! The artist drew the lizards legs into the hill.
Her parents fled China at a time when people were told what to be and how to think.
I think these kinds of books where it walks you through the life of someone who accomplished something great because it teaches kids that they can do anything. These people just started put as normal people just like the kiddos.
