The Painted Kiss
The Painted Kiss: A Novel | Elizabeth Hickey

Gustav Klimt, one of the great painters of fin de sicle Austriaand the subject of Helen Mirrens latest film, Woman in Goldtakes center stage in this passionate and atmospheric debut novel, which reimagines the tumultuous relationship between the Viennese painter and Emilie Flge, the woman who posed for his masterpiece The Kiss, and whose name he uttered with his dying breath. Vienna in 1886 was a city of elegant cafs, grand opera houses, and a thriving and adventurous artistic community. It is here where the twelve-year-old Emilie meets the controversial libertine and painter. Hired by her bourgeois father for basic drawing lessons, Klimt introduces Emilie to a subculture of dissolute artists, wanton models, and decadent patrons that both terrifies and inspires her. The Painted Kiss follows Emilie as she blossoms from a nave young girl to one of Europe's most exclusive couturiersand Klimt's most beloved model and mistress. A provocative love story that brings to life Vienna's cultural milieu, The Painted Kiss is as compelling as a work by Klimt himself.

Really interesting read about Klimt, Emilie Flöge and their surroundings. I learned many new things and was still entertained- it might not be a quick read but it‘s a very pleasant one! 4/5 ⭐️

My fiancé is usually at training on friday night so I have the apartment to my own. With two sleepy cats, tea and a good book it‘s exactly my kind of friday night fun? I‘m currently buddy reading this with @Tanisha_A I‘m only seven chapters in, but so far it‘s very interesting (but also a bit concerning regarding the age of the protagonist Emilie, who later posed for Klimt‘s painting ‚the Kiss‘ and was also his mistress later on)

Tanisha_A 😘 And, I am really curious to see how she becomes a costume designer and a businesswoman! What a fine book for a buddy read! 1y

When you coordinate your bookmark with your book because you're a total nerd ? I am on a self imposed reading "diet" where I'm trying to only read books that take place in, or are about people from, Amsterdam or Vienna (in preparation for my upcoming trip). The problem is that I get frustrated that I can't read what I want and end up resenting the books I'm making myself read. But I am a girl on a mission. I will do this!

LeahBergen I always coordinate my bookmark with my read. 😆 7y
TrishB Me too 😀 @LeahBergen - colour or theme! 7y
Bookish_B @LeahBergen I do too though sometimes it's a better match (like this one) than others 😊 7y
DivineDiana @Bookish_B I understand! I feel this way about Book Club reads. Even though I enjoy the book! 7y
