Aud (it rhymes with "shroud" ) Torvingen is six feet tall with blond hair and blue eyes. She can restore a log cabin with antique tools or put a man in a coma with her bare hands. As imagined by Nicola Griffith in this ferocious masterpiece of literary noir, Aud is a hero who combines the tortured complexity with moral authority. In the aftermath of her lover's murder, the last thing a grieving Aud wants is another case. Against her better judgment she agrees to track down an old friend's runaway fiance--and finds herself up against both a sociopath so artful that the law can't touch him, and the terrible specters of loss and guilt. As stylish as this year's Prada and as arresting as a razor at the throat, Stay places Nicola Griffith in the first rank of new-wave crime writers. From the Trade Paperback edition.

“You were protecting yourself. You wrapped yourself in armor and pretended to be invulnerable. Growing up inside that armor twisted you a bit out of true, but it doesn‘t matter. The essentials are all there.”

She searched my face. “The armor‘s getting too small, Aud. You have to choose.“

4.5/5⭐ I love how the author made the pronunciation of Aud's name a legit, meaningful recurring theme rather than just inserting a one-time example.

The character growth throughout the book is extraordinary. The motif of Aud growing from larva into imago is beautifully, painfully, laboriously executed as she works through her grief, breaks out of her protective armor, & comes to an understanding with the world & people around her.

readordierachel I picked this up at a library sale. Glad I did, as your review makes it sound wonderful! 5y
hissingpotatoes @readordierachel Yes! Definitely read the first book, The Blue Place, before this one if you haven't. It'll make more sense then. 5y
readordierachel Oh, thanks for the tip! I didn't know there was a first book! 5y

Exposed meant conspicuous, different, not fitting in, not feeling at home, at least not until you learn that your self is your home and no one can take it away.

That‘s what I wanted from the world, to feel nothing. To feel nothing and not be involved, for everything to stay comfortably outside myself and not get in. How did people survive all this knowledge of suffering in the world? How did they carry it around, day after day, and not go mad?
