Dave the Potter
Dave the Potter: Artist, Poet, Slave | Laban Carrick Hill
10 posts | 7 read | 2 to read
To us it is just dirt, the ground we walk on... But to Dave it was clay, the plain and basic stuff upon which he formed a life as a slave nearly 200 years ago. Dave was an extraordinary artist, poet, and potter living in South Carolina in the 1800s. He combined his superb artistry with deeply observant poetry, carved onto his pots, transcending the limitations he faced as a slave. In this inspiring and lyrical portrayal, National Book Award nominee Laban Carrick Hill's elegantly simple text and award-winning artist Bryan Collier's resplendent, earth-toned illustrations tell Dave's story, a story rich in history, hope, and long-lasting beauty.

Dave the Potter is a biography by Laban Carrick Hill published in 2010. This is a Coretta Scott King Author Award Book. It is about a man named David Drake who was an enslaved potter in South Carolina. He sees the good in things that others don't like dirt and makes beautiful things from it. I think this would be a great book for any age.

This Caldecott and Coretta Scott King award winner is a picture book that tells the story of David Drake, an enslaved potter in South Carolina. This biography is interesting because it‘s written in free verse poetic form! Because it is poetic in nature, it would make for a great storytelling #ucflae3414sp21

This simple poetry manages to tell the story of an artist who is known mostly through the few short poems that he inscribed on some of his pots. It does not gloss over slavery, acknowledging that Dave was remarkable, but he was still considered property, and that he died never knowing something as fundamental as freedom.

This is a story about a man named Dave who was a slave and a potter. It was a very advanced book for some age groups. It was also great story for them to learn. I had some information in the back that would be useful for teaching a lesson as well

I loved this NF/B book. It tells the story of a slave who was incredibly skilled in pottery, telling his story over the course of this beautifully illustrated book. I loved the story this book told, but what really got me were the illustrations- they are breathtaking. This book would be appropriate in pretty much all elementary classrooms. #ucflae3414sp18

devin.s This book unsurprisingly won the Caldecott honor. This could be a great RA or CR book for your classroom. Here is a link to a social studies lesson on this book: http://www.socstrpr.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/10-Final-Summer-2013-MS06535-... UDL: 2.1, 2.3, 3.2 ELL: 4, 9, 20 6y
