The Rebel Angels
The Rebel Angels | Robertson Davies
Available as an eBook for the first time, The Rebel Angels is the first book in the celebrated Cornish Trilogy. Gypsies, defrocked monks, mad professors, and wealthy eccentrics—a remarkable cast peoples Robertson Davies’ brilliant spectacle of theft, perjury, murder, scholarship, and love at a modern university. Only Davies, author of Fifth Business, could have woven together their destinies with such wit, humour, and wisdom.

Finished this re-read for my book club. Robertson Davies was a force in Canlit when I was growing up. I read and loved his books in my late teens/early twenties.
His world is the university & the eccentrics therein. He pokes fun but there's no doubt that it's a place of wisdom & intellect, a force against bourgeois, materialist 20th life. I bought it at 22, harder to swallow at 52. Still a somewhat thought-provoking & entertaining read.

LeahBergen I haven‘t read one of his books in AGES. 5mo
merelybookish @LeahBergen Same! In some ways I felt I could appreciate his ideas more (all the medieval and Renaissance thought he weaves in) but I also felt more sceptical overall of what he stands for. But he does create vivid characters. 5mo

Rereading an old favorite. Wondering if Bobbie Johnson, who appears to have been the only person to ever borrow this book from the Coastal Plain Regional Library, enjoyed it as much as I do.

I'm sure it's been 20 years since I've read this one but it takes place at the University of Toronto, pokes plenty of fun at academia and the most memorable character (for me) is a professor who studies, um, poop. Yep. #funphotofriday @Liberty

Mehso-so

1/3 of The Cornish Trilogy down! A tasty salad of ideas, themes, symbolism, satire... It was smart; but the point of it all wasn't clear. I'm thinking that it's value lies in its being part of the whole trilogy.

BethFishReads I loved these books. Sorry they're only so-so for you 10y
Dogearedcopy There us a lot to love, and after all is read and done, I may very well end up bumping up my rating! I just haven't had that "Aha!" moment yet where it all clicks. @BethFishReads 10y

shawnmooney I came of age in Canada when Davies was an insufferable cranky snob of an old man of letters and I couldn't get past all that to read any of his books. Decades later, I do think I'll at least give 'Fifth Business' a go. 10y

Just started this backlist title Sunday night, and to say it's resonating w/me would be something of an understatement! I'm all mixed up with this book, my memories, and 2 nights of intense dreaming... I couldn't let go of this book right now even if I wanted to!
