Mehso-so

Some of its essays are a Pick (my favourite, On Three Ways Of Writing For Children)some are So-So(the review of George Orwell's or Tolkien's works)and I even had a Bail(a reply to one of his critics)Those essays that fulfil its purpose,ie writing a book about Stories and why do we like them, are very interesting. It was on my TBR list for a while and I'm happy I read it; I know I'll revisit some parts but probably will never fully reread it again

In a sense a child does not long for fairy lands[...]Does anyone suppose he really and prosaically longs for all the dangers and discomforts of a fairy tale?[...]It would be much truer to say that fairy land arouses a longing for he knows not what [...]far from dulling or emptying the actual world, gives it a new dimension of depth. He does not despise real woods because he has read of enchanted woods:the reading makes all woods a little enchanted

"When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I'm fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up". This whole paragraph of "On Three Ways of Writing for Children" is the reason why I bought this book ♥️
