Missing Molly | Natalie Barelli
post image

I recently stumbled across this author and have now read several of her books.
Goodreads blurb:
Everyone has secrets, and Rachel Holloway is no exception. She‘s worked hard to keep the past where it belongs: dead and buried. And so far, she‘s been very successful.
But now the small newspaper where she works wants to produce a podcast on a cold case: the disappearance twelve years ago of little Molly Forster.
#loveprevails #missingpersonday 🔻

JoScho Some secrets should never see the light of day, and as far as Rachel is concerned, whatever happened to little Molly is one of them. Rachel has a life now, a boyfriend she loves and a three-year-old daughter she adores, and she will do anything to protect them.
But to do that, no one can ever know that she is Molly Forster.

Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus and sparked a boycott that changed America. Harriet Tubman helped more than three hundred slaves escape the South on the Underground Railroad. Shirley Chisholm became the first black woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

JoScho The lives these women led are part of an incredible story about courage in the face of oppression; about the challenges and triumphs of the battle for civil rights; and about speaking out for what you believe in--even when it feels like no one is listening. Andrea Davis Pinkney's moving text and Stephen Alcorn's glorious portraits celebrate the lives of ten bold women who lit the path to freedom for generations. 3y

Pickpick

I was sold when the blurb compared this book to a cross between The Blair Witch Project and Midsommar. This is a story of a documentary filmmaker traveling to the secluded village where her grandmother grew up and the everyone disappeared with no explanation. I found the setting the be creepy and was hooked from the beginning. There were a lot of wonderfully eerie elements but there were also sad and gut wrenching parts that were hard to read.

Sharing books by black authors during the month of July. I will add the synopsis from Goodreads below and in the comments.
In the style of New York Times bestsellers You Can‘t Touch My Hair, Bad Feminist, and I‘m Judging You, a timely collection of alternately hysterical and soul‑searching essays about what it is like to grow up as a creative, sensitive black man in a world that constantly tries to deride and diminish your humanity.⬇️

JoScho It hasn‘t been easy being Michael Arceneaux.

Equality for LGBT people has come a long way and all, but voices of persons of color within the community are still often silenced, and being black in America is…well, have you watched the news?
(edited) 4y
JoScho With the characteristic wit and candor that have made him one of today‘s boldest writers on social issues, I Can‘t Date Jesus is Michael Arceneaux‘s impassioned, forthright, and refreshing look at minority life in today‘s America. Leaving no bigoted or ignorant stone unturned, he describes his journey in learning to embrace his identity when the world told him to do the opposite. 4y
JoScho He eloquently writes about coming out to his mother; growing up in Houston, Texas; that time his father asked if he was “funny” while shaking his hand; his obstacles in embracing intimacy; and the persistent challenges of young people who feel marginalized and denied the chance to pursue their dreams. 4y
See All 7 Comments

Sharing books by black authors during the month of July. I will add the synopsis from Goodreads below and in the comments.

With few other options, African-American classical musician Gethsemane Brown accepts a less-than-ideal position turning a group of rowdy schoolboys into an award-winning orchestra. Stranded without luggage or money in the Irish countryside, she figures any job is better than none. ⬇️
#readblackauthors #blacklivesmatter #blm

JoScho The perk? Housesitting a lovely cliffside cottage. The catch? The ghost of the cottage's murdered owner haunts the place. Falsely accused of killing his wife (and himself), he begs Gethsemane to clear his name so he can rest in peace. Gethsemane's reluctant investigation provokes a dormant killer and she soon finds herself in grave danger. 4y

Saving Ruby King (Original) | Catherine Adel West
post image

Sharing books by black authors during the month of July. I will add the synopsis from Goodreads below and in the comments.

Set in the South Side of Chicago, an epic, enthralling story of a young woman determined to protect her best friend while a long-buried secret threatens to unravel both their families.
⬇️
#readblackauthors #blacklivesmatter #blm

JoScho Family. Faith. Secrets. Everything in this world comes full circle.

When Ruby King‘s mother is found murdered in their home in Chicago‘s South Side, the police dismiss it as another act of violence in a black neighborhood. But for Ruby, it means she‘ll be living alone with her violent father. The only person who understands the gravity of her situation is Ruby‘s best friend, Layla.
4y
JoScho Their closeness is tested when Layla‘s father, the pastor of their church, demands that Layla stay away. But what are his true motives? And what is the price for turning a blind eye?

In a relentless quest to save Ruby, Layla comes to discover the murky loyalties and dark secrets tying their families together for three generations.
4y
JoScho A crucial pilgrimage through the racially divided landscape of Chicago, Saving Ruby King traces the way trauma is passed down through generations and the ways in which communities can come together to create sanctuary. 4y
See All 6 Comments
JoScho Saving Ruby King is an emotional and revelatory story of race, family secrets, faith and redemption. This is an unforgettable debut novel from an exciting new voice in fiction and a powerful testament that history doesn‘t determine the present, and that the bonds of friendship can forever shape the future. 4y

Luster: A Novel | Raven Leilani
post image

Sharing books by black authors during the month of July. I will add the synopsis from Goodreads below and in the comments.
Sharp, comic, disruptive, tender, Raven Leilani's debut novel, Luster, sees a young black woman fall into art and someone else's open marriage.
⬇️
#readblackauthors #blacklivesmatter #blm

JoScho Edie is stumbling her way through her twenties—sharing a subpar apartment in Bushwick, clocking in and out of her admin job, making a series of inappropriate sexual choices. She's also, secretly, haltingly figuring her way into life as an artist. And then she meets Eric, a digital archivist with a family in New Jersey, including an autopsist wife who has agreed to an open marriage—with rules. 4y
JoScho As if navigating the constantly shifting landscapes of contemporary sexual manners and racial politics weren't hard enough, Edie finds herself unemployed and falling into Eric's family life, his home. She becomes hesitant friend to his wife and a de facto role model to his adopted daughter. Edie is the only black woman young Akila may know. 4y
JoScho Razor sharp, darkly comic, sexually charged, socially disruptive, Luster is a portrait of a young woman trying to make her sense of her life in a tumultuous era. It is also a haunting, aching description of how hard it is to believe in your own talent and the unexpected influences that bring us into ourselves along the way. 4y
JamieArc I‘m really hoping this is a Book of the Month pick for next month 🤞🏻 4y
JoScho @JamieArc that would be awesome 🖤 4y

She is really good at these guys. I made a unicorn while we were on vacation and it isn‘t easy at all. Also one of my friends hasn‘t read or watched the movies and kept calling Dobby a troll 🤦🏼‍♀️ 4y
ElizaMarie @JoScho not read or watch!? That is insane!!! She needs to at least see a bit of it to understand how great she did on it! 4y

Bookish_Viking Are the Hunger Games books like the movies? I‘ve been wanting to read them, but I was kind of disappointed with the ending of the movie series. It felt like Katniss became less and less important and by the last movie she felt almost irrelevant. 4y
LaraS @ReaperOfTerrasen I loved both the movies and the books. And maybe it does start to feel like it‘s something bigger than Katness at the end, but the books are told from her POV so she‘s with you, every step of the way, all the way to the end. 4y
JoScho @ReaperOfTerrasen I honestly didn‘t get past the first book. I felt like the second one was a slow struggle. 4y

1. Oh that is a hard one. I would love to be named after a literary character but I don‘t really know which one. I mean Jo is in Little Women but that isn‘t why I was named Jo.
2. We have a cat named Frankenstein and a dog named Church from Pet Sematary.
Thanks for the tag @Eggs @TheSpineView

TheSpineView Thanks for playing! 😊 4y
Nute Much love for a cat named Frankenstein and a dog named Church! I just watched the remake of Pet Semetary a few weeks ago. Creepy! 4y
Oldschool_millenial There's a YouTuber whose cat is named Sir Terry Pratchett, or Sir Terry for short. His other cat is Will-o-the-Wisp, or just Wisp. Both are ADORABLE 😻😻 4y

Sharing books by black authors during the month of July. I will add the synopsis from Goodreads below and in the comments.
⬇️
#readblackauthors #blacklivesmatter #blm

JoScho In this rousing call to leadership, the self-described millennial spokesperson for the culture, CNN‘s designated "woke AF" former commentator, and the youngest national press secretary in the history of the United States shares her take-no-prisoners approach to life, politics, and career success, and shows a new generation how to be loud and powerful in their own right. 4y
JoScho Many people—most notably white older men—may try to stop Symone Sanders from speaking up and out. But Symone will NOT shut up. And neither should you. In this inspiring call-to-action, Symone tells stories from her own life of not-shutting-up alongside loud young revolutionaries who came before her to help you find your authentic voice and use it to your advantage; 4y
JoScho to fight ideological battles more effectively; and to resist those who try to silence you.

We are all gurus, masterminds, artists, entrepreneurs—we are the change agents we have been waiting for. IT IS US. And the time is RIGHT NOW. I know you‘re wondering, “But HOW?” And we don‘t have all the answers! Symone is the first to admit we‘re all winging it in one way or another.
4y
JoScho But the point is we‘re out there doing it. So get started. Open your mouth and start talking. Loudly.

No You Shut Up goes beyond the surplus of “Vote-Or-Die” books we‘ve seen before. Because change doesn‘t just happen at the ballot box. We need people fighting oppression, injustice, and inequality—in the workplace, on the cultural battlefield, in government, in every corner of the world.
4y
JoScho With spirited storytelling filtered through a voice that cannot and will not be ignored, Symone inspires you to start now. You don‘t need to have all the answers, or wait your turn to help create the change you want to see. All you need is a new toolbox, an unshakable commitment, and the confidence and guidance to wield those tools effectively. 4y
