3 posts | 12 read | 9 to read
Garth Nix, bestselling author of the Keys to the Kingdom series and Shades Children, combines space opera with a coming-of-age story in his YA novel A Confusion of Princes. Superhuman. Immortal. Prince in a Galactic Empire. There has to be a catch. Khemri learns the minute he becomes a Prince that princes need to be hard to killfor they are always in danger. Their greatest threat? Other Princes. Every Prince wants to become Emperor and the surest way to do so is to kill, dishonor, or sideline any potential competitor. There are rules, but as Khemri discovers, rules can be bent and even broken. There are also mysteries. Khemri is drawn into the hidden workings of the Empire and is dispatched on a secret mission. In the ruins of space battle, he meets a young woman, called Raine, who challenges his view of the Empire, of Princes, and of himself. But Khemri is a Prince, and even if he wanted to leave the Empire behind, there are forces there that have very definite plans for his future.

Mehso-so

Listened to this on a road trip with my nephew this weekend. It was good, asked some interesting philosophical questions about human nature, but it wandered a lot and could have been done much better. Didn't get attached to the characters. Such potential in world building.

Just bought this book for a road-trip with my 12yo nephew. Just the right length, and I love Garth Nix. Hopefully he'll enjoy it. Anyone heard of this one?

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Know of it but haven't read it :) 8y
Larkken I started it but never finished. Didn't quite grab me all the way but I liked the echoes of Dune, and then the library took it back... I can't wait to hear what you think! 8y
the_hibernator @Larkken Too bad it didn't grab you. But I'll stick with it, anyway since it's hard to find a tween-aged "boy" book that is also the right length and that I haven't read. 8y

Pickpick

My brother put me on to this one so I already had some expectations before picking it up. I have to say it was not what I expected but really raised some interesting questions about human nature. I also loved that it was a one off as I find this so rarely in fantasy books! Recommended!! 👍👍👍
