One rant I do want to make is about the story Shell. So many poems or stories emphasise how dreadfully draining and difficult motherhood is and as a mother I do not disagree. In so many ways it is the hardest and most complex thing I have done and do each day but...at one and the same time being a mother is deeply, creatively meaningful.

Jacki Kay has marvellously created many different voices in this collection of short stories. Why don‘t you stop talking was terrifyingly shocking, the awkwardness in Timing, funy The Oldest Woman in Scotland & A guid Scot‘s Death are probably my favourites, memorable Out of Hand, the clever Physics and Chemistry and the beautifully moving expression of death in In between talking about the Elephant. Well worth reading.
