The First Husband
The First Husband: A Novel | Laura Dave
13 posts | 24 read | 34 to read
A savvy, page-turning novel about a woman torn between her husband and the man she thought she'd marry. Annie Adams is days away from her thirty-second birthday and thinks she has finally found some happiness. She visits the world's most interesting places for her syndicated travel column and she's happily cohabiting with her movie director boyfriend Nick in Los Angeles. But when Nick comes home from a meeting with his therapist (aka "futures counselor") and announces that he's taking a break from their relationship so he can pursue a woman from his past, the place Annie had come to call home is shattered. Reeling, Annie stumbles into her neighborhood bar and finds Griffin-a grounded, charming chef who seems to be everything Annie didn't know she was looking for. Within three months, Griffin is Annie's husband and Annie finds herself trying to restart her life in rural Massachusetts. A wry observer of modern love, Laura Dave "steers clear of easy answers to explore the romantic choices we make" (USA Today). Her third novel is packed with humor, empathy, and psychological insight about the power of love and home.

9-10-22: My 89th finished book of 2022! Annie Adams leads a great life in LA with her boyfriend Nick. She is a travel writer traveling all over the world for her column. Then one day Nick says he has reconnected with a past girlfriend and wants to move out. Stunned Annie then meets Griffin who changes her life. Annie was a bit wishy-washy for me but otherwise this was a cute story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣8️⃣9️⃣

My last two reads were excellent, but depressing- hoping this one will be pretty mindless. #currentlyreading

I normally thoroughly enjoy Dave's writing, but I could not bring myself to enjoy this book. I couldn't get into it. The writing lacks her normal lyricism and flow, and the story is lacking in pull.

A fun book about love, heartache, and finding yourself. A great summer read.

I gave this book a thumbs up for the writing style. I haven't read anything by Laura Dave that I don't like, and I appreciate her strong female leads. I did, however, find the story painfully unrealistic and hard to relate to. I guess that's how romantic comedies go, though. All in all, it was a good book and I finished it within a few hours.

Lucas.Rencher It sounds good! 7y

Not as wonderful as I'd hoped it would be.

Great story! Annie had such a hard time making firm choices and trying to figure out what to do with her life when unexpected things happen. When she was uncomfortable, I was too. I think this made for solid writing in this story.

There were a few places that had me holding my breath: "What will Annie choose?" "Will she go or stay?" I didn't know how it would end until the final chapters but I was thrilled when things worked out the way they did.

This was the first of Laura's books that I read, and I loved it. Her writing is sophisticated and funny and thoughtful.
