Here is a picture of our town Menorah. Night one if Hanukkah. To make a long story short...in the Temple, back in the day, there was only enough oil to burn the sacred light for a day...yet it lasted for 8 days. Hence, the festival of lights. Each night we light another candle. First night one, second night 2...and so on. The candle in the middle lights the other candles. You put the candles in from R to L, light them from L to R.
Kaye Thanks for sharing the photo and the explanation. That‘d be neat to live in a place that has a large celebration of the holiday. We live in such a backwater, it‘s a miracle they hang up a string of Christmas lights downtown. It‘d be fun living in a place that celebrated lots of diverse holidays that we never see or learn about here unless we read it in a book. Do you make special foods for the festival, or do gifts like Christmas ? 6y
AmyG We make latkes....potato pancakes...served with sour cream or apple sauce. When the kids were little they would play a game with a dreidel (spinning top wth hebrew letters). When our kids were little they usually got one “big” gift....and little gifts to open each night. One gift was always a book gift. 6y
